FINANCIAL. FERTILIZER PRICE DECLINE FORESEEN New Nitrate Process Is Used| . at American Smelting and Refining Plant. BY J. €. ROYI Special Dispatch to The NEW YORK. Decemt Stuntial deciines the prices of chemicals which Mnake wp comme cording to s should brin cially to the Sout e 1 f the West, wisich did not enjoy liberal returns from their 1926 crops. One of the tactors calculated to bring the cost of proper fertilization of the soil to more moderate figures ' is the inauguration of operatior a commercial scale at the Ame Smelting and Refining Co.’s Norte nitrate plant on the nitrate pampa. This plant represen the results of 10 years’ study on th part of the Guggenheim engineers into the possibility of employin Jeaching methods for the extraction of ‘sodium nitrate from the rock as mined from the ground Cost Is Reduced. These insolu- ble compounds hitherto had prevented satisfactory ext In addition it increasing the co . stabilizing ions, sodium sulphate compound already ex- fsting in the raw material could be broken down, freeing the nitrate and tying up the sulphate with the stabil- izing iron. Als was found that the solution in the crystallizing process the sodium nif could be cooled to a much lower tem- perature without .depositing the sodi- um sulphate with the sodium nitrate. Other Fuel Unnecessary. The process was developed to such ®n extent that the heat generated by the chemical action itself made other fuel unnecessary, except to operate the power plant. In addition the com- pany equiped the Coya Norte plant with the most efficient of labor-saving machinery for mining and handling, and thus further reduced the costs. The dependence on Chilean nitrates has been continually emphasized in this country since the development of the artificial nitrate plants at Muscle \Shoals was begun. The reduction in the cost of the Chilean nitrate will b_rlgg it in direct (‘omg:tlt‘k?n with the Loans at 57 to 5% Eccnomical Conditions Tyler & Rutherford Loan Correspondent of the Mutual Benefit Life Ins.
