' Meanwhile Keeler makes himself a hero o Sidney Sands. a girl in the second cabin, concealing his_identity. Trask breaks goum‘l- and meets Sidney. who fascinates im. (Continued from Yesterdav's Star.) APT. BLODGETT cleared his throat, sat erect and leveled a thick forefinger at the in- valid “I am the captain of this #hip,” he began, in his heavy voice. “My word Is law aboard this vessel. 1 can put you In irons if I choose. In any event, 1 believe I shall put you under arrest. I don’t know what your game is, but 1 don't like it. “T don't like people on my ship who travel under two or three names, and don't like 'em when they can’'t walk one minute and when they do a hop, skip and a jump in the next. You're a suspicious character, sir.” Trask listened with a smile. 'm going to put vou where you won't annoy any more passengers, and I'm going to put a guard over you, sir,” continued the captain. “I'm not going to have you jumping around, either in the first or the second cabin. 1 believe you're a dangerous man, Mr. Trask or Mr. Trumbull, or whoever you are.” der. In the second place, is Miss Sands getting off at Key West' Keeler swallowed hard. “‘It's as bad as that, sir, is it?"” Yes, it's as bad as that!” cried Trask belligerently, then added, *“if she ever speaks to me agaln.” Keeler sighed and shook his head mournfully. “I was hoping, sir, that you and Fat chance I'd have Miss Kent, anyhow, after the way the beans have been spilled this afternoon. It all comes of you trying to think, Keeler. You're old enough to know that you can’t. And I order pou peremptorily never to try to do any thinking for me again. Keeler was humbled to the point of dejection. “But I'm not going to leave this ship,” reiterated Trask. *So it's up to us to think of a way to stay aboard. Get busy, now!" “You told me I wasn't to do any thinking, ~Mr. Trask,” protested Keeler. “Don't be a fool, Keeler. busy!! exclaimed Trask, angrily. The fruitless cogitations of Trask and his guardian were interrupted after severnl minutes elapsed by a knock at the door. Keeler answered, first motioning his patient into a chair. The caller was a deck steward, \vlltlhi a note to be delivered to the in- valid. Trask looked at the untamiliar writ- ing on the envelope, which was ad. dressed to “Mr. Spencer Trumbull,' and frowned speculatively. The note within caused him genuine bewilder- ment. Tt sald. “I find myself much disturbed in mind concerning the affair in Capt. Blodgett's office. My faith has been Get Trask was not smiling now. The idea of being a prisoner appalled him. Aunt Mehetabel was grimly triumph- ant. Lucille sighed and averted her eyes. Sidney was sitting very straight in her chair and, whether she knew it or not, she was frowning. She seemed about to speak. Keeler, however, did the speaking. epped from behind the chair and made a little bow to the master of Gulf Stream. “Captain,” he said, “I'm going to ask you, sir, not to do what you say. I'll tell you why, sir, and you'll un- derstand. It's something I've tried to keep a secret, on account of this gen- tleman’'s family; but I see it's no use now." Trask’s eves were slowly widening. “You see,” continued Keeler, drop- ing his voice to a low tone, “Mr. gfumbull here comes of very excellent people. He had a nervous breakdown some ‘time ago and it affected his *"What!" exclaimed Trask. ‘Keeler, you're a liar!" Keeler looked at the captain apolo- getically. “You see how it is, sir. It affects him in different ways. Now, one of his notions is that he can't walk. Of course, he doesn’t have that notion regular; just at times. But when he does have it, it affects him so that he really can’t walk. He's as good as a real cripple, sir. When he doesn't have it, why, his legs are all right \ and he can walk.” Trask listened in a dream. “Now, captain,” continued Keeler @venly, “it would probably do Mr. ‘Trumbull a permanent injury if you were to lock him up, sir. It would have a very bad effect on him. I couldn’t be responsible for what would happen to him. But hels quite harmless, sir. If you'll just leave him with me, sir, I'll guarantee he'll make no trouble at all for anybody. Just him keep his stateroom, sir, and I'll promise to take first-class care of him.” Koeler. pleaded with eyes and ges- tures, as well as voice. “I believe you're telling the truth at last,” commented Capt. Blodgett. ‘es, sir,” sald Keeler proudly. “‘Captain, he hasn't uttered one true ‘word!” exclaimed Trask fervently. “That will do, sir,” ordered Capt. Blodgett, with a wave of his hand. “I'm_satisfied with the way things stand now. I believe what this man :nohr says, Now, here’s what's going though he were Back to his stateroom. ““Thank happen: “Keeler, you may take this man .I “1 shall expect you to be responsible you, captain for him.” “1 certainly will, sir.” nd tomorrow, when we put in at :(hcly West, both of you get off this . The dismayed exclamation was from Trask, who almost leaped from his chair. “I don’t propose to carry any high- Jumping lunatics on my passenger lst,” announced Capt. Blodgett with finality. “The palr of you get off at Key West tomorrow. That's all!” He arose from his seat, signitying that the session was over. Sidney Sands slipped from her chair and made a formal little bow to the captain. Then she crossed the office, ‘without even a glance at Trask, and ‘went out. : Lucille, Aunt Mehetable and Mrs. Kent followed, in silent procession. ‘The goddess ventured a timid, half re- proachful glance at the patient, who was still in a daze. Aunt Mehetabel wore an expression of sweet victory. ““Wheel him out!” ordered the cap- tain. . Keeler swung the chair around and ‘wheeled him out. Trask was too staggered by the ver- dict of Capt. Blodgett to utter a word until he had been trundled imto his stateroom and the door closed behind him. Then, the spell of inertia broken, he leaped from the wheel chair and turned upon Keeler, his eyes blazing with anger. 'Now you've ‘done it!”” he cried. ou big bonehead!” Keeler backed away a step and his Jaw dropped loosely. = “A fine mess you've got me into! yelled Trask, thoroughly excited. 1 &et put off the ship tomorrow!" “I did the only thing I could think of, sir.”’ pleaded Keeler. “What business had you to think? Who told you to think? When the blazes did you ever get the notion you could think for me?” “But I couldn’t see you sent to the lockup, Mr. Trask, ‘Wherever that is aboard ship. T was only trying to save you that, sir.” | shaken, but it is not shattered. I cannot—I must. not—believe that you are what my aunt maintains you to be—an impostor. It would shock me beyond measure to discover that you are what my aunt maintains you to be—an impostor. It would shook me beyond measure to discover that you had deliberately practiced an impoei- tion, when all my sympathy had gone out to you in your affliction and when I did so want to be of some service in making your suffering seem less. “Can you not give me some assur- ance that you are really what you told me you were—a sick and injured mar? The story told by your nurse concerning the condition of your mind I will not—and cannot—believe. "1 feel that certain of my ideals are at stake in this matter. Are you not truly an invalid. I pray, for the sake of my faith in human nature, that you are! “I will not—unless T must—believe that my first opportunity to offer con- solation and help to a fellow being in need of them been misdirected through a deception which would be the very refincment of cruelty. “Won't you break vour reticence— at least to me—won't vou offer me some proof of your sincerity? Tell me it is not true you can walk and run, As my aunt says! I feel sure she must have been mistaken, and in my heart of hearts I do hope that she is. “LUCILLE.” “Anything wrong, sir?” inquired Keeler, as he noted the blank expres- sion on Trask’s face. “Read it, if you like,” said Trask, offering the note. Keeler read slowly, completing the effort with a sigh of satistaction. “It looks better, sir, doesn't it?" he observed, in a hopeful tone. “Better! How?" “Why, Miss Kent, is ready to stand by you, sir. If I may say it, she's interested.”” “Interested in me? Not on your life! She's interested in my being an invalid—that's all. She hopes I can't walk, because if I can, her ideals are all smashed up! That's a cheerful hope, isn't it? I've got to be a cripple, Just to sustain her faith!” Keeler looked doubtful. "It does seem a little that way, Mr, Trask,” he admitted. “But if she’'s interested that much, it may lead to— well, you can’t tell sir.” despalr, “She’s a very young lady, sir,” he ventured. *“And, if you'll allow me, Mr. Trask, I might say that it would be a shame to-- s " Keeler referred to the letter. “Shatter her faith in you. “Bunk!” observed Trask, brutally. “What would be the use of my Inspir- ing interest in a lady who would lose her interest the minute I got up and walked? You don't expect me to sit in a wheel chair the rest of my days, just to oblige her, do you?" “You might do worse, sir. “Nonsense! Anyhow, I'd. sooner jump for Miss Sands than play sick for Miss Kent.” “That's what I'm'afraid of,” mur- mured Keeler, shaking his head. Trask laughed with cruel gayvety. “As for me being in bad with Miss Kent, I'd like to know where you stand with Miss Sands, ‘Capt. Fer “Don’t sir!” “How do you expect to explain all that soldler-of-fortune stuff, ‘cap- tain” Keeler raised a protesting hand'| and squirmed in his chair, “I--I don't know, sir. I was going to ask your advice about that.” “Well, my advice is to steer clear of her, Keeler. You can't ever ex- plain it.” “And not see her again, sir?” There was deep woe in Keeler's voice. “Exactly. She must have a fine opinion of you.” Keeler was abstractedly nursing one hand within another. “I suppose it. does look pretty bad for me, Mr. Trask. It seems like it's always been that way.” Always?" “I've never had any lucl Something happens every tim “Heart affairs?” Keeler nodded. “I—I was almost married in my fighting days, sir. She was a very handsome young lady, Mr. Trask. She worked in a restaurant. And then they put me against the champion— and that settled it. She just wanted a winner.” Trask grinned understandingly. “The worst of it was, I'd saild 1 was the champion, added Keeler. “When she found it out, of course, it was all visage of" " fine and handsome sir. ‘Save me?
