KEW YORK, December 17.—Wall reet today took the United States Steel dividend action in the only way svhich seemed reasonable, as a vote of confidence in the business outlook, by 2 hBdy of men whose judsment is uni- y Iy respected. In this way it af- foxded a stumulus to the general mar- Ket and sentiment in business circles. *The trading in United States Steel, especially at the opening, and for a Half hour or so afterward, was enor- 1nbus. It was more exciting than any Wall Street has seen in a long while. “fhe market had been right on the ] | i | Abranmastraus. 65" Adams Exp (6).. Adv Rumley. Adv Rumley p 4Ahumada(t60c) . I was plain that while Wall Street for months has been discussing a stock Adividend on United States Steel and hns-frequently named the figure at 40 yer cent, still it was surprised. New York Central and Reading both Jumped’ two points. Atchison made a new high record. Southern Railway was very strong. The talk was that the example of the United States Steel board would e an encouragement to some of the railway directorates, which are be- lieved to have plans for extra distribu- tions in prospect, but which have not =t put them through. With recent profit taking absorbed, the New York traction group moved forward again—Brooklyn, Manhattan, Interboro Rapid Transit, Third Ave- nue and Manhattan Modified guaran- teed. Brooklyn Manhattan made a new high record for the year. American Smelting was one of the eaders of the industrials with an ad- vance of some 5 points, most of which occurred right at the opening. December 17.—With ([Liverpool quotations lower than due iund with bearish crop advices from fiArgentina at hand, wheat values here underwent an early setback today. A rush to sell wheat took lace at the opening, but sufficient uying soon developed to steady the market. Wheat opened % to % off, end afterward scored a moderate rally. Corn, vats and provisions were easy, corn starting at 14 to 5 decline &nd later showing some recovery. Assertions that Chicago May deliv- ery of wheat is the highest priced wheat in the world attracted a good deal of notice among wheat traders ay. It was also contended in some s that, according to statistics, the United States apparently still has 2 generous wieat surplus, which must find export outlets to avoid a burden- some carryover at the end of the crop year. Reports of larger offerings from Ar- gentina and of favorable harvest ither there were among additional rish factors in today’s wheat mar- likewise current that from Buenos Aires Province, tina, show larger Jelds than expected.
