December 13— In| view of the slow but steady advance which went on near all last we 2nd with the absence of anything un- vavorable in the over e \Vall Street began business today in a decidedly cheerful frame of mind. ‘Phere were, however, no differences in the character of the market from those that had become familiar dur- ing the last month and a half. "As usual, interest was principally taken up with a few group movements and with the operations for the rise which were going on in a number of selected stocks. Once again these points of strength gave a strong tone to the market, but without bringing on any general advance. i For some time it has been remark- ed that investment buving, having exhausted opportunities in the higher grades of the bond market, was going into the lower grade and into stock of established reputation as dividend payers. This sort of thing showed plainly in the trading today, particu- larly in the strength of the dividend vaying lllinols Central was he idea that as a 7 per it was behind the market. tages was much . Good sup- ort kept on for the shares of the oads traversing the Northwestern ates—Northern Pacific, Chicago and Northwestern at one time up nearly a point, and Great Northern preferred. The leaders in the motor group were Chrysler, Packard, Willys-Over- land and Plerce-Arrow. Buying of these stocks was stimulated by favor- able reports regarding the relation between output and new business which came in from the manufactur- ing centers. Phillips Petroleum stood out strongly at a new high for the yvear. Marland at one stage was higher and so was Shell Union. The American Bankers’ Journal in a 1927 forecast, says in part: “Three major factors that have recently been the subject of concern, namely, build- ing operations, the automobile indus- {try and the cotton situation in the South, all show signs that they will be able to work out satisfactory and that such readjustments as may be necessary need not affect general busi- ness to any serious degree. “No demoralization has taken place in the South, as was feared by some people, and many cotton planters will realize a better return from a large; crop at low prices than from a short | crop at fancy prices. Moreover, the low prices have been a boon to the textile industry. Heard in Financial District. Controller of the Currency J. W. LEADERS IN BONDS | Treasury 3 3-4s Are Feature in Trading Today on New York Exchange. BY GEORGE T. HUGHFS. NEW YORK, December Strength in special issues character- ized trading in bonds at the start In nearly every group sume one obligation was taken up. and | while activity fell off somewhat froia preceding sessions the market as a whole had a very strong appearance _In the United States Government list it was the Treasury 3%s, the lowest coupon rate and the last long- term obligation to be offered, tha- was the leader. The bands sold above 103 for the first time in history, to return approximately 1%, about the rate which it is now agreed that the Treasury will have to pay for its next long-term borrowing. The high-grade first mortgage railroad bonds weres comparatively negiected, as has been the case all during the remarkable rise in Government issues. French bonds were prominent in the foreign list. French 7s crossed 98 for the first time in their history and French 7%s made a new high for 1926. French provincial and munic- ipal bonds held around their best pre- vious prices. Dealings in the Italtan 7s were on a very large scale, sev- eral transactions taking place in blocks of $100,000 and $150,000 par value. Under this demand the price advanced fractionally. A few of the higher.ylelding rail- road bonds monopolized attention in this part of the market. Among them were Erie convertible D 4s, which at 84 were up a point under most per- ! sistent demand. This is the only Erie §6% | issue which 1s now convertible into 95% 574 564% 104% stock. There was a heavy turnover in Erfe general 4s, but without much change in price. Wheeling and Lake Erfe consolidated 4s of 1948 had a brisk run-up of a int and a half evidently on spectal buying. A better feeling prevailed with re. gard to local tractions. The word “St. Paul” was dropped, it was explained, in the in. terest of brevity and because the road was generally known throughout its territory as the “Milwaukee.” Business associations in St. Paul and Minneapolis, however, took up the fight for the retention of “St. Paul because of the sentimental attach- ment to the name in the Northwest and in Wall Street. The reorganiza- tion managers announce that they would defer to that sentiment and again change the road's title to Chi- cago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific. PR L R Washington Stock Exchange SALES.
