The American Bankers’ Journal in a 1927 forecast, says in part: “Three major factors that have recently been the subject of concern, namely, build- ing operations, the automobile indus- {try and the cotton situation in the South, all show signs that they will be able to work out satisfactory and that such readjustments as may be necessary need not affect general busi- ness to any serious degree. “No demoralization has taken place in the South, as was feared by some people, and many cotton planters will realize a better return from a large; crop at low prices than from a short | crop at fancy prices. French 7s crossed 98 for the first time in their history and French 7%s made a new high for 1926. French provincial and munic- ipal bonds held around their best pre- vious prices. Dealings in the Italtan 7s were on a very large scale, sev- eral transactions taking place in blocks of $100,000 and $150,000 par value. Under this demand the price advanced fractionally. A few of the higher.ylelding rail- road bonds monopolized attention in this part of the market. Among them were Erie convertible D 4s, which at 84 were up a point under most per- ! sistent demand. The word “St. Paul” was dropped, it was explained, in the in. terest of brevity and because the road was generally known throughout its territory as the “Milwaukee.” Business associations in St. Paul and Minneapolis, however, took up the fight for the retention of “St. Paul because of the sentimental attach- ment to the name in the Northwest and in Wall Street.
