NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE ON NEW YORK HIGHER CALL RATE HALTS STOCK RISE, Many Issues, However, Soon Turn Upward—O0il Shares Are Stronger. BY STUART P. W Epecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, November 29.—An ad- vance in the rate on standing call| loans from 4% to 5 per cent. the; highest in two weeks, was given credit for the check which appeared in the stock market today. As a matter of fact. this was purely a perfunctory explanation. The money advance was merely one of those sur- face fluctuations which happen now and then when the Government is withdrawing funds from the market or when interior banks are. for one reason or another, reducing their balances. 1 Both operations are of a temporary | character and when set against the big essentials of the money situation amount to nothing at all. The rise in money rates came in handy as an excuse for a pause in the market movement, which would have un- doubtedly come about anyway. Among the few features of the day were the strength in Bethlehem Steel mnd the higher market for some of the oil shares. Bethlehem Steel for weeks had been hanging around 44. 1t did not begin to show signs of life until Saturday. Then, under what was obviously special buying, the stock started forward and the advance rontinued today. Wall Street for =ome time had been discussing a $4 dividend for Bethlehem. and the com- mon opinion is that some action will he taken hefore long. At first the other independent steel ®=hares were not inclined to follow Rethlehem, but as the day went on stacks like Gulf States and Sloss-Shef field hecame stronger. Raflway_shares were a good deal nived. Realizing came into last week's favorites, Rock 1sland and St. l.ouis-San Francisco, and Atchison #old off after an early advance. Union Facific and Northern Pacific, on the other hand, were steady. In the afternon United States &teel regained the loss which it had sustained at the start. Reports from Washington that the Interstate Commerce Commission had proposed to hasten the investigation of freight rates might have had some- thing to do with the afternoon real- izng sales in some of the dividend- paving rails. CLOSE IS IRREGULAR. e Stocks Reach Day's Prices in Last Hour. By the Associated Press NEW YORK, November ~The losing was irregular. Several stocks reached the best prices of the day in the final hour, despite an advance in the call money rate to 5'z per cent. which retarded the general forward movement. South Porto Rico sugar, after slumping to 143, rebounded to a new high abhove 151. but Savage Arms and Real ® Hosiery declined to new 1926 lows.
