BY EDWARD C. STONE. Bank clearings in the leading citles in the United States for the week ending Thursday totaled $8,538,088,- 000, a decrease of 10.8 per cent from the corresponding week last year. Part of the decline is due to the fact | that banks In some cities, Baltimore helnL’ one, were closed on Armistice Washington cleared $28,347,000, |in” comparison with $28,033,000 for the same period a year ago, or an in- |crease of 2 per cent. Local clearings { by the month, however, are running j well ahead of '1925. - { Takes Cotton for Merchandise. To relieve the cotton crisis in the outh a merchant in Monroe, Ala., is ccepting cotton at 15 cents per { pound in payment for merchandise, at the same time urging all other mer- chants to do likewise. An Alabama banker is filllng the newspapers with dvertisements urging farmers to bor- row on their cotton at 53 per cent }and hold it for better prices. In-many | places hankers and growers are work- jing oul plans for keeping 25 per cent of the crop off the market and also toward reducing next year's acreage. The Manufacturer’s Record asserts it all these moves are in the right ,direction, but regrets that the South ‘did nét act soon enough so that the eiforts of President Coolidge’s com- mittee in raising funds would not | have been needed. The record calls {the present crisis the greatest oppor- | tunity the South has ever had to show its financial independence, and wishes ome leader would arise to unite the bankers, cotton growers, merchants and all other residents to meet the emergency, with a minimum of out- side ald. . Market on 6 Per Cent Basis. Moody's Weekly Review says in part: “Capltal seems to be too plentiful to admit of anything except strength or stability. Last Summer the pleth- ora of capital checked what looked like 2 bear movement, and now it is depressing interest rates even during the Autumn boom. “Investors in both stocks and junior bonds have been restrained from buy- ing more freely through the feeling that prices were too high. The pres- ent stock market, however, is selling is, whereas at the peaks of 1880 and 1882 and 11893 it sold around a 5 per cent basts, {and at the peaks of 1902 and 1906 it sold around a 4 per cent basis.” Bankers Join in Rudolph Tribute. ! There was a reversal this week of the trend of wholesale commodity quotations. Contrasting = with las week's excess of advances in Dun’s list, declines predominated this week, 43 reductions being reported, out of a total of 80 changes. A vear ago in- creases were slightly in the majority. One of the features this week was the further easing in. hide prices, while | some cotton goods quotations also were lowered. A reaction in coal _prices, following the recent upturn, attracted attention, and the decline in that fuel caused sympathetic weak- | ness in coke. Richmond Bill Holdings Drop.
