By the Associated Pi ISHPEMING, Mich., November 8.— A general geological survey of the Barnes-Hecker iron mine, where a cave-in last week resulted in the loss of 51 lives, completed today by L. T. Barrett, inspector of the State mining department, has revealed that every scientific precaution was taken by the Cleveland Cliffts Co., owners of the shaft, to prevent such accidents. nthing that would have served as |a warning of the impending cave-in was found in an examination of the earth formations in the district, a re- port issued by Mr. Barrett sald. Julius Strobel, 83 vears old, who was the last surviving charter mem- ber of the old Washington volunteer firemen and who aided in the organiza- tion of the new District Fire Depart- ment in the early 60s, died at his home, 613 Sixth street southwest, early today, after a long illness. He served for many yeart in'the old Persever- ance fire company, which played a prominent part in fighting fires in Washington during Civil War days. After leaving the Fire Department, many years ago, Mr. Strobel was a railroad engineer and then was engi- nerr in charge of the heating system at the Jefferson School, remaining there 30 years. He was retired in 1908.
