C., OCTOBER- 3, CONSIDERS CLOSING OF OYSTER SCHOOL Dr. Ballou Awaits Decision of Parents on Mud, Cold and Furniture Lack. The new James F. Oyster School on Calvert street will be temporarily closed early this week if parents of the approximately 200 pupils indicate they are dissatisfied with conditions there as they now exist, Dr. Frank W. Ballou, superintendent of schools, announced jast night. Should the school be closed, it was stated by Dr. Ballou, the pupils will necessarily have to stay home, inas- much as there are no other accommo- dations that can be offered them. 1t was disclosed last night that Dr. Ballou’s inclination to follow the de- sires of the parents is also held by several members of the Board of Edu- cation, who, with the superintendent, inspected the school yesterda A combination of circumstances have /caused dissatisfaction among some parents of children attending the ames . Oyster School. One is that grading of the street is in progress with a steam shovel in front of the buildings, compelling the children to wade through a quagmire of mud. Another is that the heating plant has not been perfected, and a third is that all of the necessary furniture has not vet arrived, Dr. Ballou makes it plain that all pupils of the Oyster School should |report tomorrow” when vigorous ef- forts will he made to remedy the conditions. It is planned to put down rdwalks for the children. A fir was tested in the fur vesterda The weather, according to school of | ficials. will have a great deal to do with the solving of the problem. If the weather is fair and warm, in all probability it will be found practicable to continue operation of the schoo but {¢ it turns rainy and chill it will likely be closed. The question of the advisability of closing the school was brought before the school officials by Morton J. Luchs, real estate man, who lives in the neighborhood and has two children in | the school. In a letter to Dr. Ballou, in which he complained of the situa. tion there as a taxpayer, Mr. Luchs frankly stated he did not believe the ing conditions should be tolerated, . Be sure you are right then go ahead said David Crockett, and following his example, we are surely in the right in our campaign against the excess interest and carry- ing and service extras on vour credit and budget buying for something vou did not get. That is why we are go- ing ul\c:u[ with these mes- sages every day to drive home the fact that you are paying extra interest for something you did not bt And we will win out for vour ultimate hénefit.
