By the Associated Press. LOS ANGELES, Calif., September .—Scientific temperance instruction | and research, as opposed to obsolete | methods used by the old-fashioned | temperance lecturer, will be discussed | at today's session of the National | ‘Women's Christian Temperance Union | convention. | Dr. Valeria A. Parker of New York, | president of the National Council of | ‘Women, in an address last night ad-| vocated an international campaign to | crush “wet propaganda.” She de-| clared the actions of some Americans | abroad, coupled with the propaganda, was one of the greatest handicaps to ‘the dry law enforcement. Europe's View Biased. Dr. Parker sald European newspa- per readers were without means of knowing the constructive effects of prohibition, because they read only the wet news cabled from New York. “They get the wet metropolitan slant on prohibition, and every one knows the New York idea is to do away with prohibition and drink freely,” she de- clared. Today's speakers include Miss Cora Frances Stoddard of Boston, director of scientific education for the W. C. T. U., and Capt. Richmond Pearson son, president of the International Narcotic Education Associatior. The convention has unanimously indorsed resolutions approving Fed- eral prohibition enforcement efforts, and pledging its co-operation to Presi- dent Coolidge. Takes Up Business Program. The convention then swung into de- tailed business. Mrs. Francis P. Parks of Chicago, corresponding secretary, delivered what she termed “American Womanhood's Answer to the Wets” with the announcement that 53,380 new members of the W. .. T. U. had been enrolled since March. Mrs. Parks figures showed that New York State led in new enrollment dur- ing that period with a total of 5450; California. was \d with 5,260, and Ohio third with 5,190. Every State, the secretary declared, showed a gain, the greatest increases occuring after the recent Senate prohibition hearing at Washington. A “platform” advocating world peace and a single standard of moral- ity for men and women was prepared at yesterday's session and will be voted upon toda: The planks include condemnation of “straw votes” as a weapon ‘“delibe- rately forged to break down public morale in the matter of law observ- ance,” and refusal to accept govern- mental control of liquor traffic as a substitute for prohibition. Has Faith in Coming Generation. The platform “repudiat that_prohibition has incr ing by youth as a whole, charges | clares t! the coming generation to complete the | Nation’s “emancipation from the | drink evil.” | The concluding plank reads: “We do not believe in war and now | that we are at peace with the world, | we believe it a_good time to work for | | perpetuation of peace. | “We once more affirm our belief in | a single standard of morals for men and women and that of the highest | standard.” | 'he program vesterday ws: a memorial to I . founder of the W.
