FONERAL THURSDAY FOR MER EASSDY Archbishop Curley to Preside at Requiem Mass for . . St. Stephen’s Rector. Mer. Joseph H. Cassidy, 69 vears ©ld, rector of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church for the past 16 years, died yesterday in Georgetown University Hospital after a short lliness. Death was attributed to a stomach disorder the serfousness hich was not known until late Saturday night. Mgr. Cassidy had a leg amputated @bove the knee about_a vear ago, due to a condition of the limb result- ing from hardening of the arteries. The operation incapacitated him for several months, but he recovered and prior to his recent illness had heen carrying on his dutfes as rector. Prior to coming to Washington Mgr. Cassidy was reetor of St. John's Church at Westminster, Md.. for 18 vears. He had been a priest for 45 vears. Born in Baltimore, he was educated at §t. John's School and then at St. Charles’ School. He received theolog. feal traininz at St. Mary's Seminary and was ordained a priest in 1881 He had the purple robes of a domes- tio prelate conferred on him in 1924 and in the same vear was appointed a monsignor by Pope Pius XI.
