Brennan is a_ Catholic and Smith a Methodist. The Ku Klux Kian is strong in some parts of the State, though not through the Si as a whole. But many of the klans- men are Democrats. Brennan is claiming a non-partisan, or rather a bi-partisan, support here in Chicago. He has intimated that he 4s mnot opposed to the Coolidge pol zh he id he would uinst the resolution pro- posing American adherence to the World Court if he had been in the enate. Just where he is to get the Republi votes is not so clear. Smith was supported in his fight salnst Senator McKinley for the . ial nomination last April by the Crowe-Barrett and Willlam Hale Thompson factions factions, if any, of the Republicans that Brennan might be expected to draw. Republicans Holding Back. While Mr. Brennan is at it hammer and tongs, the Republicans areshold- ing back thelr campaign, which they say will not begin much before October 1. In the first place Col. Smith is not he: nd is scarcely in a physical condition to carry on a long campaign himself. One danger which the Smith sup- porters face is a return visit of the Senate campaign Investigating com- mittee, promised for this month. If there should be further damaging dis- closures before the committee, the sltuation may be changed. There s not a little speculation here as to what will happen in the event of the death of Senator McKinley, who is desperately ill. His term does not expire until’ March 4 next. If he should die Gov. Small either would ap- point to fill temporarily the vacancy or a successor would be elected In November. In some quarters it is insisted that the Republican State committee could nominate a candidate and the Democratic State committee could do the same. In others the belief prevails that a primary would be necessary and those who hold that attitude say there is not time for a primary campaign to be followed by 2 campaign for the general. % 1f Gy tee should pick a Senator or a candi- date for election for the short term, as the case might be, it is belleved Col. Neither the government of Spain nor of Valencia have any | part in the court, yet they honor its acts. None of its decisions is ever re- corded. No lawyers are permitted to | appear before the judges of the waters. They are men who know whereof they judge. They know what effect thelr rulings will have on the families concerned.
