REED SPRINGE, Mo., August 24.— Isaac Morrell, Uncle Ike in Harold Bell Wright's novel, “The Shepherd of the Hills,” and for half a century postmaster of the little Ozark hamiet of Notch, near here, was buried here yvesterday with much pomp. Mr. Mor- rell, 89 years old, died from an attack that came while a birthday celebration was in progress Sunday. His widow nd a son survive him. Hundreds of tourists attended the funeral. Through Wright's novel, Uncle Tke, as he was affectionately known to his neighbors, had become ' a national .character. His was the only char- ‘acter of the book whose real name was taken by the author. About six months ago the Poat Of- fice Department abolished the office at .Notch, but Uncle Ike refused to quit the job. By the Awmsociaied Press. CHICAGO, August 24.—Stabilization has come #o the radio receiver indus- try, from the manufacturer to the retailer; with the advent of more set- tled co na in the process of pro- ducing and selling, declares Charles E. Butterfield, member of the Institute of Radio Engineers. Likewise radio equipment itself has undergoné a change for the better and has reached the point where standard- ization {8 being given the considera- tion long-held necessary for success in this fleld. From a market that sprang up al- most overnight, with the demand far exceeding.the supply, resulting in a literal scramble by the buying public for radio material, th"‘n‘. devyeloping a situation that the ‘manufacturers and retailers have forecast as tending toward a smoothly functioning in- dustry. . Feverish Growth at First. So great was the demand for radio equipment when the listening fever first struck the American home that more manufacturers and retailers were | attracted to radio t subsequeng de- velopments have shown could exfst. Probably one of the best barometers of conditions is the situation in Chi- cago, radio center of the Middle West. Hére, when radio first became vogue. retall stores came into being as fast as shelves could be stocked. New storés seemed to develop their quotas of néw customers and nearly every day saw hustling clerks attempting to ait on’ three customers at once. Al- most. any article, éven sometimes whén its connection with radio was more or less vague, would find a ready sale, To meet this condition, manufac- turers were forced to increase their output, although such a heavy demand apparently could not continue forevel Relapse This Year. ‘Thé beginning of 1926 saw a change. It was not difficult for the nhserver to see that the fleld was overcrowded. The buyer began to slow down. He had stécked up on radio equip- ment, his knowledge of the art having increased a hundredfold, until he could revel in éxperimentation to his heart's delight without replenishing his equip- ment every time hé triéd a new cir- cuit. In ‘addition, hé had reached a point where his buying eve had been sharpened. and he purchased only those articles that were absolutely essential. Chaos Goné from Industry. A weeding-out procéss developed and the result has been to bring stabiliza tion to the industry and disappearance of the chaos that was attendant upon its babyhood. While the slowing down has led to some discussion of over- saturation, survevs of manufacturers have shown that siich a situation is far from an actuality. These surveys indicate that there always will be & good markKet for radio and that to a certain extent it will parallel the automobile in this respect, with the demand for the completed re- celver showing a slight edge over that for parts. ~ RADIO'S BEST OFFERINGS TONIGHT.
