August 13. —Prices rallied bnskh on the Stock Exchange today following an early decline on the idea that the 50 per cent stock dividend on General Mo- tors had been discounted and that sentiment would be unsettled by the raising of the New York Federal Reserve rediscount from 3% to 4 per cent. In the end neither of these inci- dents counted. General Motors after hreaking nearly 7 points, more than regained its los: S. Steel. which had dropped off 2 points or so at the beginning, rallied in the last half hour well abov day's close and th was a remarkable upturn In some of the rails. NEW YORK, August 13—Lower prices for bonds of the investment grade were the rule in today’s maft- ket, reflecting the advance in the re- discount rate of the New York Fed- eral Reserve Bank from 3% to 4 per cent, announced after the close yes- terday. The effect was most. noticeable on United States Government obligations, but it was to be seen also in first mortgage rafls. Losses in Libertys and Treasury notes were more uni- form than in a long time, and brought quotations for the entire group down nearer to the low than to the high of the year. Treasury bonds lost more ground than the Libertys. The Treas- ury 4%s had the largest decline. At the same time volume of trading was small, and the market at no time w weak. The same was true of the col porate bonds, where declines of ap- proximately a qlmrl@r of a P”mv. were registered In s ypie: Atchison general 4s, with a [.,le Ls back in a few individual issues cluding New York Central 5s and Rock Island refunding 4s. Recent favorites among the high- vielding rafls moved irregularly. | Denver and Rio Grande Western sold down a point and Missouri, Kansas, Texas adjustments dipped below 93. On the other hand there was good support for International eat Northern adjustments and for Seaboard Air Line bonds. Fraction- al losses were recorded by the local tractions, including Interborough 7 per cent notes, Third Avenue re- funding 4s and adjustment &s, and Hudson and Manhattan incomes. CHICAGO, August 13.—Revival of European demand for North Ameri- can wheat, with new export purchas- ing estimated at 2,000,000 bushels, gave an upward swmg to the wheat market today, but advances in price failed to hold. Weakness which de- veloped in the corn market tended to put wheat values down at the last. Heavy profit-taking sales were on in corn, and the corn market lacked the aggressive buying which has char- acterized it of late. ‘Wheat closed unsettled at the same as yesterday’s finish to 5 lower, corn 2% to 3% down, oats % to lallf off and provisions unchanged to’25 cents off. In connectlon with unlooked-for price upturns at Liverpool today, wheat traders here called attention to reports that stocks of wheat and flour abroad are far from burdensome and that shipments to Europe appear to be small, especially to Great Brit- ain. IEstimates from authoritative sources are that British imports of wheat and flour should be in the neighborhood of 3,250,000 bushels weekly on the average. Decldedly better export demand for North American wheat was in evi- dence today. It was pointed out, too, that notwithstanding recent smalln of export dealings, the call for wheat here has continued sury active. One of the reasons that although wheat in central terri tory is being rushed to market in | liberal volume, a considerable parc of | the current receipts are of wet, tough | wheat that is difficult to handle that as a result absorbed.
