Average Near Top. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, August 7.—Another sensational outburst of buying in Gen- eral Motors, which soared 93 points to a new record high for all time at 217, featured the resumption of the upward movement in today's stock market. At the close the average of 20 leading industrial issues was within 15 point of the highest level ever re- corded, while the average of 20 lead- ing rails was at the highest point since 1913. Desplte the crippled wire service to Western points, brokerage houses re- ported a further expansion in public participation, which was borne out by the broadening demand for stocks. Except for the publication of a few semi-annual earnings statements, which compared favorably with those of the same perfod last year, there were no new developments to account for the brisk demand for stocks which appeared to reflect a growing specu- lative bellef that current prosperity in most lines would carry through un- til the end of the year. The relatively small increase in stock exchange mem- % | bers’ loans last month, in view of the + 4 - e rt AT M D e T e I+++ ++4 1+ i % o sF¥EresafiEe88 i s +41 1 PR eRSm 5 T44 10 14 ++ 1 +4++++ R ++01101 & com o EFEF AL+ 144 BEEE bttt + o e * Mo e e FAEREFEE b2 102 marked increment in quoted values, was regarded as a_favorable omen, and widely construed as an {ndication that stocks had passed into strong hands. Pools were again active, particu- larly in some of the low, priced indus- trials. New peak prices for the year, or longer, were recorded by a wide assortment of issues including Amal- gamated Leather, Bloomingdale, But- C, AUGUST 8 terick Publishing, Consolidated Cigar, Cudahy Packing, Douglas Pectin, In- ternational Harvester preferred, R. H. Macy, Onyx Hoslery preferred, Ray Consolidated Copper, Union Carbide, United Cigar Stores, ernol' Pictures and Westinghouse Brake. The rapid advance m several of the 'high-priced industrial specialties indi- cated a scarcity in the floating supply. Air reduction was bid up to 10% points to 183, du Pont jumped nearly 10 points to 304% and American Lin- seed, American Radiator and Loose- ‘Wiles Blscuit showed net galns of 3 to b points. American Brown Boveri moved up over 2 points to within a fraction of the record high on rumors of important developments affecting that company. Ralls were not as active as the in- dustrials, although Atchison, New York Central and Southern Railway all mounted to new high prices for the year. CLOTH MARKETS QUIET. Quotations Show No Change Dur- ing the Light Trading. NEW YORK, August 7 (#).—The cloth markets were qulet today, with quotations showing no change. Spot 64x60 prints cloths svere quoted at 78 ocents and 37T4nch 4.yard sheet- ings, 9% cents. The surglcal trade gave Fall River more than half of the busjness booked this week. Bag- makers bought moderately. Printers, bleachers, converters and manufac- turers were all moderate traders dur- ing the past week. The burlap market has shown a weaker tendency, several importers shading equipment quotations by as much as 13 points. 8. H. KRESS SALEQ NEW YORK, August 7 (#)—Sales of 8. H. Kres & Co. for the seven months ended July 31 were $25,384,- 231, an increase over the same period last year of 13.4 per cent. July sales were $3,696,118, a gain of 17.8 over 1ast July. o/ 1926—PART 1 WHEAT TRADE SLOW, AWAITING REPORTS Pri.een Ease a Little on News of Better Crop Conditions in the Northwest. By the Assoclated Press. CHICAGO, August - Wheat traders gave evidence today of a dis position to go slow untll Government reports due next week are out both at Washington and in Canada. Bet ter Canadian crop conditions, cool temperature and showers tended meanwhile to ease wheat values down. Closing quotations on Wheat today were unsettled at the same as vester- day's finish to G lower, corn u changed to % off, oats showing 'y to % drop and provisions urynu, from b cents decline to a rise of 10 cents. With wheat transactions largely local in character, signs that the United States wheat visable supply total would be liberally augmented on Monday had only a silght bearish ef- fect, despite Kansas City stocks alone showing more than 3,000,000 bushels increase for the week. One reason advanced for the relative steadiness of the wheat market was the fact that milling demand for cash wheat in the leading centers is fairly good and re- ports from the Southwest in particular indicated flour busisess is active. Improvement in export bids for cash wheat both here and in the Southwest was noted, but the seaboard failed to confirm any export buying of consequence. Pre ng opinion to- day was the United States Govern- ment crop report to be issued after the close on Tuesday will raise the official July estimate on Winter wheat to around 600,000,000 bushels, com pared with 567,000,000 bushels in July. | Spring wheat s not expected to be! changed to any extent from the pre-| vious estimate of 200,000,000 bushels. Lower temperatures in the corn belt with probable showers in Kansas and Nebraska brought about a slight de- cline in the corn market. Hedglng ~1925--26— High. Low. 107% 61 Stock and dividend.
