AIRWAYS guessed something of what was passing in her mind and smiled to himself, He knew that the Wakamba belonged to the mildest races in irkca in spite of their fearsome ac -t but he said nothing to en- Jiguien Richenda on this point. It would, he reflected, sult his purpose SUDDENLY THE NOISE OF TWO fully, slung the gun again across her shoulders. They were tramping through coarse, man-high grass now, not able to see more than a few yards before themn. Suddenly” the foremost boy halted. then turned with a finger to his lips to warn them into, silence and mut- tered a whispered word. Fairways frowned, puzzled. : “Go_carefully,” he told her. I dont know what the boy is trying to tell us. There's ‘something ahead, but 1 can’t get the English name for it. Water buck, perhaps.” They moved on with quiet steps till they saw through the grass a round, short tufted clearing in front of them, Then Jeroge stood quite motionless and drew their attention to where, not 60 yards to the vight, large, black, shadowlike patches moved slowly in the shade of a clump of stunted trees. “Good egg!” Fairways’ whisper was barely audible. “It's buffalo!” He raised his rifie to his shoulder, taking slow and careful aim. So far none of the herd had scented the nearness of the danger which threatened them. The presence of the humans had pagsed unseen by the old bull sentry which stood ‘“‘nose up- wind” ready to give a quick snort of warning if occasion for flight arose. Richenda’s eves, wide with excite- ment, were fixed on the odd dozen un- wieldy blue-black forms that moved so leisurely about the tree-shadowed turf. Buffalo! What mighty brutes they were! Some one had told her that hunters might search for weeks even in this game-infested country without seeing one. And now—so big—so near—so quiet! Such a chance to show what she could do! The spirk of the chase danced anew in her blood. If—If—suppose she—Oh, why mnot? Suddenly the'noise of two reports, with barely a second’s pause between them, rang out across the silent coun- try. “Good heavens!” Fairways' steel blue eyes flashed sideways at. her, REPORTS “'ITI%QRELY A SEC- OND'’S PAUSE BETWEEN THEM RANG OUT ACROSS THE SILENT COUNTRY. better if she imagined the neighbor- hood in which he intended to camp far more dangerous than it really was, Meanwhile, both had reached a point when they felt that the less speech there was between them the hetter. So, as the es crawled-by, they sat in silence. But one thought hammered ceaselessly through Rich- enda’s brain. This man who had bent her will before his own—who had carried her off as primitive man might carry off his slave woman, who had so outrageously deceived her, had wooed and won her—keeping her deliberately in constant touch with the woman who had formerly been his—secretly insulting her by that very contact—this man who had taken her belongings for his own, even counted the money in her purse, this man of no doubt & score of evil intrigues in the years behind him— who once possessed a wife of whom he had not troubled to tell her, this man who, in the years still to come, would embark on still further intrigues af- ter he had tired of her, .who had taken her trust, her faith and broken both into shattered pieces, who then had laughed in her face. . . . This man—she hated him! Some day, somehow, she would get away from him! \' The camping site that Fairways rhose in the late afternoon of the sec-| ond day lay in a smail hollow in the heart of an irregular clump of hills which blockel out any extensive view there might have been.s The place was very wild, very lonely. Im- mediately they halted he had Richen- da’s tent erected. “Make yourself quite comfortable,” he directed. ““Wa shall be remaining here for some time.” I'e days tha came after were very strange to Richenda. At first Fair- ways kent very close in camp and spent long hours reading at the door of his tent or lying on his back on the short grass, pipe between teeth, ®azing from under close drawn brows up to the crude hard blue of the African sky. Always he was polite to her, never forced word or presence iupon her. But the abyss between them remained as wide as ever. Their meals, with the exception of early breakfast, they took together. Strangely, Richenda was glad of this. She hated that curiosity which, she sensed, lay in the mind of their three servants who, with but little to do, seemed to her sensitive nerves to be watching every action of herself and Fairways, and her pride rebelled at the thought that these untutored sav- ages might guess something of her captive state. Curfous half hours those meais were. Scattered’ sentences of polite conversation ran here and there through them, but in no way did the minds of these two so oddly situaged In the wilderness come closer to- rether. Once he organized a shooting ex- pedition still further into the wilds, and this Richenda found herself ex. pected to join since Fairways had no intention of leaving her behind ‘in the camp, “I'm sorry,” he told her, “but that is really impossible. You see, I shall want Macheria and Jeroge to bring back the heads and skins, to carry Yhe guns and for half a dozen other things, and I should not care to leave you here with only the toto for com- pany “Please do not consider me,” she answered with the coldness which now was always in voice and eyes. “I 'no doubt shall be quite safe.” “We are starting in an hour's time. Kindly be quite ready.” He ignored her half protest and walked away. Richenda dug a white tooth angrily into the redness of her lower lip, but .anxious no: to imperil her dignity by useless ‘argument she awaited him, fully equipped, at the appointed time, In spite of everything she enjoyed the expedition, which made a pleasant break in days that had grown rather wearisome, and Fairways unbent to the extent of pointing out much that was of interest to her. During the stay in camp before their marriage he had made of Ri- chenda as skillful a shot as those short weeks had permitted, and with the rifie he now proffered her she brought down a gazelle which offered an easy mark, shot at another which skipped agilely into the bush, flicker- ing its white rabbit-like tail gayly as went. One or two other times she ‘ned at various small game. but V nissed her mark, then, ~==iing rue- then back, without anr instant pause, to the galloping upheaval in front. But three more words had burst upan her excited ears, making them tingle ruby with the insult: “You fool—you little fool!"" The blue-gray shadows had broken inta 3 wild riot and were racing in.g. m. dozen different directions. The great bull at which Fairways had_taken such careful aim, startled at Richen- da’s shot, which rang out the second before the mian’s shot reached him, had taken a swift leap, catching that bullet some 12 inches away from the vital spot at which it had been atmed. (Continued tomorrow.) BODIES OF A. E. F. MEN STILL BEING RECOVERED Remains of Soldiers Are Sought Over Many of Famous Battle- flelds of World War. By the Associated Press. PARLI: nearly eight years since the end of the World War, American searchers in the old battle area are contnually finding bodies of American soldlers who fell in battle and were buried hastily near- by. Searching has been going on more or less regularly during the entire pe- riod since the armistice, but in recent months the Oise-Aisne, Meuse-Argonne and Somme sectors have been literally combed, with the result that 261 bodies have been found, of which 175 have Dbeen positively identified. The searching work is being done by three separate parties, consisting of an American investigator and four or five laborers. The investigator works by map and terrain over ground where certain regiments and battalions fought and from which men are still carried as missing. The quick growth of vegetation has made the work dif- fleult, as grass and bush have grown Gver temporary burial places and, in fact, changed the entire appearance of the land. Recently the bodles of seven marines were found in the Ofse-Aisne sector, buried together, this being one of the largest “finds” in many months, as usually only single bodies are re- covered. STUDENTS MAKE ATLANTIC HUGE SUMMER CAMPUS 52 U. S. Colleges Represented on Vacation Trips, With Many More Expected in 1927. By the Assoclated Pres PARIS, August 7.—With students from 52 American universities travel- ing In the tourist cabin of the Levia- than, shortly after the close of the college year, the Atlantic Ocean has become a huge Summer campus, says Dr. S. C. Rowan, president of David- son College Alumni Association. Dr. Rowan believes the gathering togeth- er of such groups of college students means a better understanding among young men and women rrom different parts of the United States, as well as a better understanding among them and students abroad. “All are classmates on this Sum- fner campus,” Dr. Rowan declared when he arrived at Cherbourg. ‘‘On the Leviathan scions of Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Pennsylvania, Chi- cago, Cornell and Erown, for instance, 1 forgot they were rivals for genera- tions and joined together in the sports and social life of the ship. Million- aires and poor youngsters, college belles and foot ball heroes are all the same in the third cabin of a liner. ‘While the number of American stu- dents crossing to Eu ?pe this year exceeds considerably tfle number last year, indications are that there will be a veritable flood of such travelers coming nbmd in 1927.
