Pastor Calears Bantist Church, New York Preside vl Fundamentalist Leagne. Text: “In hell he lifted up his eyes,, being in torment.” (Luke, xvi.) That hell is a definite place Jesus Christ Himself made abundantiy clear, In His story of Divies and Lazarus, as re corded in the 16th chapter of Luke, e pictures both the blessodness of | the redeemed and the appalling suf fering and “tor- * of the lost. tells us con- | ditions which men lcreate, for them selves through | to you cannot; neither can they to us that would come from thence. (Luke xvi.26.) Hell as pictured in the Bible, there, fore, is simply the eternal prison house in which the rebellious and dis- obedlent are incarcerated lest they should corrupt and destroy the beauty and glory of God's moral universe. Some say: “I do not believe in any literal hell or fire. I believe that Jesus was using figures of speech in His veference to hell-fire.” Very well, then, but do vou not know that a figure of speech Is always weaker than the thing symbolized by it? Could any material tormeénts be worse than the moral tortures of an acutely sharpened conscience in which, like that of the rich man, memory be- comes as it dwells upon misspent time and misused talents, upon omitted duties and committed sins, upon op: portunities lost both of doing and of getting good, upon privileges neglect- ed and warnings rejected? The poet arkey stimulates our imagination in the awful line: AlL that hath been that ought not to have That nufhl have been so different: that Cannot but be irresocably past. T While Cecll puts this part of the m’\llfl in a nutshell when he writes: ““Hell is the truth seen too late. A moment’s clear thinking will con- vince any reasonable mind that it i« a rational and necessary truth which Jesus Christ proclaimed in his teaching about hell. We believe that crime ought to be punished and that there ought to be jails and peniten- tiaries in this world. Shall we be so foolish, then, as to think that God | Almighty ought to be less firm, less | \ige and lexs just than earthly ralers? | And_ yet some go on day after day violuting God's laws, as though the) He is o weak that He cannot vindi- cate His laws? One-of these three things must be true of our think Kither God. is a fool, or He Is moral, or He is weak, if He has pro- vided no hell for violators of right- eous law! But He is neither of these things. “Be not deceived; God Is not mocked.” And He has hoth the means and the power to attend to vindicate His righteons law, He, must and will provide some place where the ungodly go. Violators of His holy laws must pay the penalty for their folly and sin, - Certainly Jesus Christ is trying to say to all of this teaching that hell is an awful reality, whatever its exact econdition may be, and that for a human soul to be finally alienated from God and turned into hell ix the supreme (rug- aly of the whole universe!
