By Cable to The Star. ¥ CAPE GRIS-NEZ, France, August 5.—On the wind-swept banks of the of Dover there are now gathered more of the world’s great swimmers than ever have been camped along that wicked stretchwof gray water before. They are there because they all have courage and the same desire—to swim across the English Channel. Some swimmers are training here at Cape Gris-Nez, a restfvl little vil- lage that lies half way between Bou- logne and Calais, nestling among green fields that stretch away, tree- less, toward the sand dunes and mas- slve rocks of the coast. e Gris- Nez is less than four hours’ ride by train and automobile from Paris, but it is so different from that city that it seems to be in a world of its own. There is nothing here to disturb a person training for the great ordeal of the channel crossing. All one can do is sleep, eat, tramp, swim, gather flowers or mushrooms’ in the fields and play golf on the sandy beach when the waters recede at low tide. Rocks Give It Name, That sort of life is not as mo- notonous as it might seem. You don’t tire easily of the beauty of Gris-Nez, which is so named because of the huge gray rocks that jut out into the channel waters. Gris-Nez is Nose and further along the t is Blane-Nez, White Nose. To a city-bred person, it is Interest- ing to watch the old, crippled shep. herd, in his coat of lan: wool, lean ing on his staff and making curio sounds .to his clever dog, who fusses about the flock like ung school teacher minding her kindergarten charges. Miss Gade, in 1923, almost equaled Mme. Sion’s record. Mme. Sfon is a big, handsome, blonde woman, past 40. She has tremendous pluck, and, in spite of her three failures and the fact that her legs are swollen terribly with varicose veins, she iw still gume for another trial. Ishak Helmy, the wealthy Egyp- tian, is the biggest man who has ever aspired to the channel honors and Miss Barrett is the biggest woman. Helmy is 6 feet 3 inches tall and s 253 pounds. There are others present in this lonesome waste of sand and wheat flelds and rabbit burrows who don’t care whether Trudie gets her chanve or not. Yet most people concede, despite the hundreds of failures by swimmers who seek to cross the channel, that all this vouthful cham- plon needs to succeed is a fair day. Some persons, interested in the financial benefits accuring from the presence of the channel swimmers here, wouldn't mind if Trudie were to fail again this year, thinking she might return here for another at- tempt and_again spend tremendous sums for her training'and retinue. Channel swimming is now classed as big business and no swimmers without considerable money backing, and anxious to start, and she is de termined never to give up until on the Engllsh shore. M us I ARD The failure this week of Olav ¥arstad, the Norwegian policeman, who tried for a second time to swim the channel, was partly caused by the poor accompaniment of the tug he had hired to go with him. It was at times miles away from the swimmer who combatted a terrific wind and wild sea. The engineer of Farstad's tug imbibed too freely of wine and water swamped his fires. The swimmer was fed only two bananas in all the time he was in the water.
