The first wave of confusion follow- | Ing the removal of practically all re- strictions from the use of the emerl‘ has apparently ended, according to | reports to the Department, of Com. | merce. For a week now no addition al broadcastine station has asked for | a license, which the department is | jEiving to all applicants, and no sta- | tion has been reported as planning ' an early entry into the broadcasting field. Although declining to discuss the | sltuation at length, officials of the | radio section of the department de- | lared that, bevond the reported | cases of interference®in New York | and Chicago, conditions are “quiet.” -If further confusion develops it is not expected until Autumn or early Winter. The probability of con-| Zressional action that would reinstate @ code of radio regulations. howeve: may further prevent any hasty ac- tibn by any interests that are anxious to use the ether for real public serv- fce broadcasting. Since the recent ruling that re-| moved control of the broadcasters | from the department many com- plaints of interference have been sub. | mitted to officials in letters and nu- merous requests have heenreceived asking the department to “find some | way to do something.” In such cases the radio section can take no action, and the requests are referred to the stations that are reported causing the interference. \ | i [ PROPOSE TO ABOLISH HARVARD ST CIRCLES Cn-Ordmntmg Committee Also Studies 16th and Columbia Road Traffic Problem. Current, Resistance and Temperature. in conductors variations of temper- atures affect the rvesistance of the i conduetorr and varations in -resist- ance affect the temperature of the conductor. As mentioned in yesterday's ar- ticle. the resistance of all pure metals increases with the temperature, while the resistanca of certain alloys is practically unaffected by increases in temperature. The resistance of a circular mil- foot of copper is about 9.6 ohms at 32 degrees Fahrenhelt, while at 75 de- grees it increases to 1 an increase of almost an ohm. Where great ac- curacy is desired it is, therefore, im- portant to note the temperature at which reésistance values are moted. This. of course, is necessary only in izboratory work and in fine electrical mechanisms. The increase in resistance in ohms for each ohm of resistance of the ma- terial for each degree rise in tem- perature is called the “temperature coefficient of reasistance, For all pure, metals the temperature coeffl- cient is practfcally the same. The differences are so slight that they need not be considered for all practi- cal work. The Resistance of Metal. The resistance of any metal at any slveu temperature may be found by : simple calculations. It is possible to make alloys (com- positions of various metals) which bhave a temperature coeflicient of practically zero so that their resis:- ance remains constant at practically ! all temperatures. Mln‘l.nin is an alloy composed of £ parts of copper, 12 parts of nickel and 4 parts of magancse by weight. Reproduction Prohibited. This material has a temperature co- efficient .of practically zero, so that its temperature coefficient may be taken as zero for all practical pur- poses, conductor heat is produced and the temperature of the conductor is raised. The action of the current in over- coming resistance in the conductor causes the production of this heat. Usually the amount of heat produced is very small and may be disregarded. If there is an excessive flow of cur- rent, such as can take place in the filament leads of a radio receiver when a short-circuit is produced be- tween the negative and' positive leads of the storage blattery, considerable heat may be developed. Ordinarily the heat produced is dissipated through the contact of the wires with air which draws off the heat, or through radiation. If more heat is developed than can be dissipated by the sur- rounding am and radiation the con- ductor can become very hot; so- hot in fact that it may cause fire or melt the wire itself. » Can Control Heat. If the cable is large enough, thus reducing the registance and increasing the surface aret, the wire can be pre. vented from becoming too hot for safety. It 1s for this reason that the { rules of the Fire Underwriters specify | wires of various sizes for carrying currents of different values. Some materials which have the property of increasing in resistance. with increase in temperature are used | As automauc regulators of cumnt. flow. Any increase in current in- creases their temperature and in turn the inérease in temperature i the resistance and automatically cuts “down current flow. i exceptional opportunme% for in- !
