Denial that these de- posits constitute & world monopoly also was made. It was the syndicate's first state- . ment, issued as a message to Ameri-' can farmers and financiers, since Sec- retary of Commerce Hoover and other Government officials made it known that they considered the syndicate’s control of the German potash.depos- its an “objectionable foreign mo- nopoly,” similar to. the alleged mo- nopn]le~ of ‘rubber, coffee and other *commodities. Forbes, vice president . of the Potash Importing Corporation of -America; described as an organization . financed "and oper- ated by Americans, and which con- trols the importation. and distribution of ‘all - German : potash - used in the United States. “The very size and quality of the German potash dervsits and of the technical equipment of the German potash mines,” said the statement, *“would render ; foolish ‘any” poliey “of the German petash syndicate which would aim: at:anything else:than the biggest - - possible increase ‘ot ;potash consumption as.a tenmm mh out the world.":> In national campalgns. as -to. the use of potash and free avalibility of the fertilizer at the lowest prices.gon- . sistent with “the ¢ost of production, were given as the aims of the syndi- kate.
