The zreater quiet of the phones i< especially desirable when listening in to midnight programs. Head phones are more economical {o use than a loud speaker. because they permit excellent results with much smaller sets or the use of only part of the tubes of a large set. When phones are used it is desir-| able to plug the phones into the detector or at most the first stage plate circuit of the receiver. In most receivers jacks are provided so that such connection can be made very easily. In some receivers, how- ever, no provision is made for plug- ging the phones into the detector or first stage circuits, but a volume control such as is incorporated in the Modulator plug shown in the fllustration can be used as a volume | control to cut down the volume. Where no jacks are used a high vari: able resistance having a maximum of about 200,000 ohms can be used across the phone terminals to cut down the volume to a point where it will pot be objectionable.
