NEW YORK, June 25.—Speculative honds monopolized attention in today’s trading, chiefly in three groups, the junfor rails, convertible oils, and Ger- man industrials, The leaders among the rails were the Seaboard Alr Line issues, which have been neglected for a long time. Today's activity was reported to have followed transfer of a large block of the refunding 4s from one holding group to another. start of the market, substantial gains being recorded for all the active issues. Refunding 4s Higher. The refunding 4s at one time got higher than for the past two years. The consolidated 6s were dealt in large volume, crossing 96 to within a fraction of the previous 1926 high. Seaboard's earnings have been consist- ently good all the vear, but interest in its bonds fell off after the real estate activity in Florida abated. Oil bonds were uniformly Skelly 612s had a spectacular strong. dvance ord. the rise being accompanied by large transactlons. Investment buy ing kept up in Sinclair 61s and ‘Sin- clair Ts. The two favorites in the German list were Rhinglbe 7s and the German General Electric 6s, new tops. Strength in this group was taken to forecast a favorable re- ception for the offerimg on Monday of $30,000,000 in United Steel Works Corporation 6%, maturing 1951 and priced at 96. This is the new Ger- man steel combine, and the bonds are to carry non-detachable warrants to buy one share of common stock at 125 per cent of its par value. Investment TIssues Heavy. The general bond market—that is, the investment section—was heavy and inclined to react. Apparently | dealers had stocked up, anticipating | the July reinvestment demand, which has not yet materialized to the ex- | tent expected. Starting with a firm un- dertone due to the strength of quota. tions at Liverpool, the wheat market here soon ran into commission house selling and brought about a sharp break. Starting unchanged to a half cent higher, wheat quickly shot down- grade. Defeat of the McNary-Haugen bill yesterday, with continued favor- able reports on the crop, led to early selling of corn and oats, and the value of these cereals soon went below ves- terduy’s low point. Corn started un- changed to half a cent off and later underwent a general drop. Provisions showed early firmness. Liquldation developed in the wheat market as soon as the price of July wheat dropped under $1.37 and a num- ber of stop orders were caught. Houses with Iastern connections were an- nounced the hest sellers, but local traders were not long in falling in line. Buying power was poor. The break In corn values also wae a factor ir_turning wheat downgrade. Reports from the Canadian North- west and from Oklahoma and Kansas were more promising. Warmer weath- er, however, is required on the prairie provinces of the Northwest. NEW YORK, June 25 (#).—Cleve- land dispatches to Wall Street say Edward Ver Linden, president of Peerless Motor Car Corporation, has exercised an option on the stock of the company which he took when he became president of the company. Thompson, chalrman of the governing committes, reported, on his trip to Detroit, and it was voted that the local exchange Join the newly organized Association of Stock Exchanges. Harris. director of the Potomac Joint Stock Land Bank. has returned from Roanoke, where he at tended the annual convention of the Virginia State Bankers' Assoclation. This convention was fn session at exactly the same time as the Dis- trict Bankers' convention at Hot Springs. Mr. Harris reports that the convention was very largely attended and that the addresses were highly en- tertaining and informative High Motor Mortality Rate. The most competent opinion in the motor industry estimates that of the 49 companies actively engaged in the production of cars and trucks today, not more than 30 will be in exi in a few years, James J. Kirwan says in an article in the current issue of the Magazine of Wall Street. “Beset by competition much flercer than in most industries, the rate of mortality among the weaker companies. which has been so promipent a feature of the industry since its beginning. will probably not abate.” Tece Consumption Grows. Consumption _of fce last year amounted to 700 pounds per capiti, as contrasted with 480 pounds per capita in 1914, according to a surve of the ice and refrigeration industry which has just been completed by John Nickerson & Co. The figures for individual cities show a consump- tion ranging from 2,000 pounds per capita for Dallas, Tex., to 600 pounds for Los Angeles, Cal., with an average of 1150 pounds. At the present rater® of increase, it is estimated that the average per capita consumption by 1940 will exceed 1,000 pounds. Discussing the possibilities for ex- pansion of the industry, the survey reveals that less than 50 per cent of the estimated 27,000,000 families in the United States have refrigerators in the home, and that of the familtes now using ice approximately only 17 per cent use ice the year round.
