It was God. creative Principle eternal Life and Love, which was ex- { pressed in infinite ideas, all reflecting their source, and this is the true record of God's creation, the only real | and eternal universe. “ The President of our United States issued an official proclamation for De- coration Day, May 31, calling for a nation-wide commemoration on July 4, of the 100th anniversary of the death of Thomas Jefferson. and of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Ameri- can nation, through the signing of the Declaration of Independence. When our noble President, Calvin Coolidge, took his oath as the Chief Executive of our nation, T rejoiced that God had given us a worthy repre- sentative of American ideals, one who had inherited Christly qualities from his Pilgrim ancestors. I, who am a lineal descendant of Miles Standish, have defended and preserved the spiritual qualities of the Christ-mind, which.I inherited ; therefore, 1 protest against obedience to these demands to celebrate the death of Thomas Jef-| ferson. This request, coming from our President, has pained me bevond ex- pression. because I do not beliece in the death of man, who was created by God, Spirit, eternal Life and Love, the only Creator of man and the universe, and every man was created by God, since there is but one Creator. “For the grave cannot praise thee, death cannot celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth. “The living. the living, he shall praise thee, as I do this day.” (Isaiah xxxviii., 18, 19.) “He is not a God of the dead. but of the living: for all live unto him.” (Luke xx.. 38) y The official statement of President Coolidge reads: “By a coincidence, the Sesquicenten- nial of the Declaration of Independ- ence falls upon the centennial of the death of Thomas Jefferson, who wrote TR There is no death. In God's uni- verse there is no past, present nor future. There is eternity, in which dwell forever the eternal individuali- ties of God's children. America's great historic characters are not dead. Though the human form vanish, the mental, spiritua‘ individual man of God lives. 'I‘hlrough his official proclamation President Coolidge speaks also as the voice of ‘“the Sesqpicentennial of American Independence and the Thomas Jefferson Centennial Com- ion of the United States,” and for the co-operation of “State and c officials and patriotic, civil and fraternal societies” and urges “that in every community arrangements be made for a proper observance of these two anniversaries.” The President’s manifesto then con- tinues, with a record of certain acts, by which Thomas Jefferson further assisted in the unfoldment of the divine or spiritual destiny of America, which Jefferson knew would mean to genuine Americans, followers of Christ Jesus, “children of light,” the énjoy- ment under spiritual law—“the low of life in Christ Jesus"—of the royal birthright of “life, liberty and the pur- suit of happine Thomas Jefferson had often repeated and had doubtless gained the spiritual interpretation of the Scripture, “For the law of the| Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” (Romans viii., 1.) 1. as a follower of CHrist Jesus, who caid: “Whosoever liveth and believeth in me [understandeth me] shall never die” (John xi., 26)—I cannot accede to this request of the President and unite in celebrating the so-called dcath| of Thomas Jefferson. “If a man keep my saving, he shall never see death.”| —Christ Jesus. It was spiritually conceived, born of God and| His Christ and them that are Christ's, and is being revealed, in fulfillment of | Biblical prophecy, to those who are| obedient to the law of God, Spirit, and His ever-present Christ. The makers o(i‘ America were and continue to be spirifu- ally endowed prophets of God; and of this “great company of preachers,” Thomas Jefferson was and ever will be a spiritual luminary. The, government of America is, al- ways has been and ever will be, “on the shoulder of Christ,” whose repre- sentatives, the founders of America, demonstrated their responsiveness to the opration of spiritual law, “the law of life in Christ Jesus.” To those who today are spiritually illumined, who realize the allness of Spirit, Life and Love, America’'s “re- dedication” means the acceptance and gradual demonstration of the spiritual fact of being, namely, “Spirit is infinite; therefore Spirit is all. ‘There is no mat- ter.'” (Mary Baker Eddy. Misccllany, page 357.) This process of growth comes not through the celebration of death but through the ‘understanding of the life- giving elements which are at the very root and core of America's being. “As in Adam [flesh] alt die, even so in Christ [Truth] shall all be made alive.” (I Cor. xv., 22.) “Whosoever liveth and belicveth in me shall never die,” declared the master Metaplivsician, Christ Jesus, the demon- strator over the “wages of sin,” which are the belief of life in flesh, or matter, and produce the phenomenon of death, “The last enemy which is to be destroy- ed,” not submitted to, nor even acknowl- edged,” as any part of spiritual man— and there is no other man. “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” (Romans iii., 6.) John said: “Now are we the sons of God. and it doth not yet appear what we sha'l be: but we know that when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.” (John iii., 2.) Here we have an indisputable defi- nition of man’s eternal, indestructible selfhood, identity, as wholly mental and spiritual. The first product of the so-called “carnal mind -—the Adam-Eve flesh generation—resulted in a murderer, Cain, and has continued to reproduce the subdivision of this fleshly, carnally generated mibrtal, with its murderous death heridage, “conceived in sin,” the ADVERTISEMENT. U ADVERTISEMENT. N lust of the flesh and “brought forth in iniquity,” in which all die. The voice of the everliving Christ is heard today call- ing, “Awake thou that sleepest and arise from the dead and Christ shall give thee light.” (Eph. v., 14.) America is the battle ground of this Armageddon and victory is already on the side of Christ and them that are Christ's, at this, his imminent reappearing. At his first appearing Christ gave the unassailable, comforting assurance that he would come again and that “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall be do; because I go unto my | Father.” (John xiv., 12.) Christ Jesus did the “works" of raising the so-called dead. Why should not his disciples of today do the same? This is a divine demand for all Christ's disciples, at this hour. who are willing to “suffer with him” out of the fleshly mind into the mind of Christ, that they may “reign with him” (LI Tim.ii.. 12). and continue to live with God in the royal sovereignty deathless, spiritual manhood and womanhood, which manifests itself in the spiritual ability successfully to cross swords with the so-called dragon, the belief of life in matter, or flesh, and conquer, destroy the carnal qualities which produce sin, sickness and death. “The wages of sin” the pains and pleasures of matter, end in death; “but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans vi., 23.) This was the libcrating declara- tion of Paul, who. emerging from the fierv furnace of purification, was bathed in light, the mental spiritual illumination that “shined about him from Heaven,” and revealed Christ Jesus, in fulfillment of his Master's promise, “Lo, I am with vou alway, even unto the end” (of all mortal, material fleshly sense) . . “And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man.” (Acts xix., 7.) Here is a definite statement of dii- ferent degrees of spiritual vision, of spiritual illumination. or spiritual realization. Paul had risen spiritually, to come into mental contact with the ideal Christ-man. He visualized, or re- vealed the image of Chrisj. the Son of | God. His companions, not having pro- gressed to his mental spiritual develop- ment, could not share his vision. Thomas Jefferson had risen sufficient- Iv, after yvears of thought and consecra- tion to his great ideal of liberty, to bring out, under divine revelation, the greatest documentary symbol of all time. the Declaration of Independence. It is logi- cal and imperative to understand that Thomas Jefferson, under the law of spiritual progression, is nearing the full- ness, the spiritual reality of his visiol and is revealing. or developing his spiri ual individuality, as a child of God. among “‘the great cloud of witnesses” who have gone on before him. He is a living stone in God's universal Declara- tion of Independence, the body Church, or structure of Christ, the spiritual eternal man of God's creating. “For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved we have a building of God, an house [conscioudness] not made with hands, lflrn\zl in the heavens."—(2 Cor. v., ) “Behold the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them. and they shall be his people, and God himself “shall be with them, and be their God."—(Rev. xxi, 3.) This is the teaching of Christ Jesus, the Son of God. and is the “mystery,” “hid from the wise and prudent and re- vealed unto babes,” who are eagerly striving to possess the Mind of Christ, and are vearningly looking for Christ’s reappearing, according to his promise, “I go,” but “T will come again.”” (John Xiv., 3.) Thomas Jefferson expressed his rever- ence for, and belief in, the teaching of Christ. Over a century ago, on April 21, 1808, Jefferson wrote to Dr. Benja- min Rush: “To the corruptions of Chris- tianity, I am indeed opposed; but not to the genuine preceps of Jesus himself.” Mary Baker Eddy. the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, says: “Building on the rock of Christ's teachings, we have a superstructure eternal in the heavens, omnipotent on earth. encompassing time and eterni- ty." (Message for 1901, page 25.) And again Mrs., Eddy says: “Life is real, and death is the illu- sion. A demonstration of the facts of Sou! in Jesus' way resolves the dark visions of material sense unto harmony and immortality.” (Science and Health, page 428.) 2 “The relinquishment of all faith in death and also of the fear of its sting would raise the standard of health and morals far bevond its present eleva- tion, and would enable us to hold the banner of Christianity aloft with un- flinching faith in God in Life eternal. Sin brought death, and death will dis- appear with the disappearance of sin.” (Science and Health, page g . | perience of 2,000 “I know that my redeemer liveth . . . land because he lives 1 shall live also.” (Job xix., 25; John xiv., 19.) There- fore, I can not accede to this request of our President to hold Thomas [efferson in the bonds of death. He has listened to the voice of aggressive mental suggestion and has he been mentally influenced by the dragon against his spiritual intuitions ? Our President is an avowed Christian, but in this proclamation he has been men- tally manipulated. Americans who are followers of Christ can not obey this call, to continue to believe in death, or they must disbelicve in Christ, who said, “Be- fore Abraham was, 1 am.” There was never any other but God's man, created by eternal Life and Love. Flesh is not man. “It is the Spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing.” God's rep- resentatives do not die; only flesh, the Adam-Eve generation, which is con- ceived in lust and brought forth in iniquity—only the flesh-man dies. “Heaven and earth shall pass away but my words shall not pass away, said Christ Jesus. His words continue to ring out, and are audible and demon- strable to those who believe in and possess the Mind of Christ, and who know that the flesh-man is “glass” (Tsaiah) and is not the image and like- ness of God, Spirit, eternal Life and | Love. No one dies. | God. who is eternal Life and Love, is the Creator and the preserver of man {and His universe, and there is but one God and one universe. _ Let every American unite in proclaim- {ing the spiritual presence of Thomas Jef- ferson, and let all who have shed the un- availing tear, at the seeming loss of loved ones, awake to the spiritual fact that they never died. They continue to exist, as reflectors of eternal Life and Love, never visible to material sense, as claim- ed by spiritualism, but eternally existent, as immortal children, or ideas of God: “And [ saw a new heaven and a new carth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. ; “And 1 heard a great voice out of heaven saving, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his peo- ple. and God himself shall be with them and be their God. “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor cry- ing. neither shall there be any more pain; for the fdrmer things [former thoughts which held them in the dream of life in matter or flesh] are passed away." (Revelation xxi. 1, 3, Americans poured forth flood-tides of love, from the great heart of Christ, to President Coolidge and his dear com- panion, when their noble boy. Calvin Coolidge. Jr., scemed to pass away from them; but he never died and he continues to reflect his Fathgr-Mother God, and eventually their spiritualized wision will | reveal him to them, as God's dear child, in the image and likeness of his Father- Mother God, eternal Life and Love. On this subject, Mary Baker Eddy wrote in her volume, Miscellany, p. 297 : “THERE IS NO DEATH. “A suppositional gust of evil in this evil world is the dark hour that pre- cedes the dawn. This gust blows away the baubles of belief, for there is no reality in evil. no disease, no death; and the Christian Scientist, who be- lieves that he dies, gains a rich bless- ing of disbelief in death and a\l:lighu realization of heaven. We have the promise of the ever- Longfellow Dropped the Word When He Wrote, “There is no Death. What seems so is Transition.”’—Disappearance of Flesh is not Death of Man, for Flesh Belief is not Man: Man is a Spiritual Idea of God, and Co-exists with His Creator, Eternal Life and Love.—Mrs. Stetson resists Call to Observe Anni- versary of “Death’ of Thomas Jefferson and Asserts that the Great Author of our Declaration of Independence is Immortal; Therefore She Celebrates His Continued Reflection of His Creator, Eternal Life and Love, Spirit, God. “My beloved Edward A. Kimball whose clear, correct teaching of Chris- tian Science has been and is an inspi- ration to the whole field, is here now, as veritably as when he visited me a year ago. Ii we would awake to this recognition. we should see him here and realize that he never died; thus demonstrating the funda- mental truth of Christian Science.” Mrs. Eddy also averred: “When you can waken yourself or others out of the belief that all must die, you can then exercise Jesus’ spir- itual power to reproduce the presence of those who have thought they died but not otherwise.” (Science and Health, p. 75.) “To God alone belong the indispu- table realities of being. Death is a con- tradiction of Life, or God: therefore, it is not in accordance with His law, but antagonistic thereto. . . It is un- Christian to believe in the transition called material death, since matter has no life, and such misbelief must enthrone another power, an imaginary life. above the living and true God. As sol- diers of the cross we must be brave and let Science declare the immortal status of man, and deny the evidence of the material senses, which testify that man dies. i “Resurrection from the dead (that is from the belief in death) must come to all sooner or later; and they who have part in this resurrection are they upon whom the second death has no power. “The sweet and sacred sense of the permanence of man's unity with his Maker can illumine our present being with a continual presence and power of good, opening wide the portals from death into Life; and when this Life shall appear ‘we shall be like Him." and we shall go to the Father, not through death, but through Life: not through error, but through Truth” (Unity of Good, pp. 38, 39, 41.) Permit me to quote this trumpet call of Truth from Joseph A. Seiss, D. D., in his Lectures on the Apocalypse, Vol 2, p. 354: “There is reason to believe that Moses is not dead. He did indeed ‘die in the mount’ (according to the mate- rial senses of the people of that day) . . . but he was seen alive in the days of the Saviour on the mount of the Transfiguration, seen ‘in glory, hence in resurrection life. He must, there- fore, have been raised again from the state of death. . . . Enoch and Elijah were transhtgd before the general translation o 5od's waiting and watching ones, at the coming of the Lord. . . . The dispute between the archangel Michael and the devil ‘about the body of Moses’ was a contention about his resurrection, the one stand- ing up for the recovery of that body from death, and the other resisting. A It was the resurrection and glori- fication of Moses, which was the sub- ject of collision then, and it is the resurrection .and glorification of the saints in general which is the subject aml occasion of the war here. It is Michael again, joined now by all his angels, that here stands up in behalf of the true people of God emerging into resurrection life and glory: and it is the same Old Serpent, stirring up now all the power of his kingdom to hinder and prevent the sacred seed of faith from attaining their promised exaltation. . . . “With the 'domination of death broken, the whole empire of darkness breaks with it. the reign of hell is dis- solved. and the victory of redemption is complete. With the curse of mor- tality and corruption thus swallowed up of life. the devil's sway is gone. his kingdom mutilated. and all his ma- lignant hopes against the Church over- whelmed.” Let me conclude with the words of Mary Baker Eddy: . “There is no_life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infi- nite Mind and all is infinite manifestation, for God is All-jn-all. Spirit is immor- tal Truth: matter is mortal error Spirit is the real and eternal: matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and like- ness. Therefore man is not material ; he is spiritual.” (Science and Health, p. 408.) These are the latter days and fore- shadow the second and imminent ap- pearing of Christ. Not death, but the fear of death, holds humanity in mental bondage. \We must fulfill the law of love for God and for our brother man—ifor every man is a child of God and is our brother. The fulfilling of this law of Love is the only way to health, holiness and immortality, which is heaven. Christ's disciples of today. like his beloved disciple John, who at Christ's first appearing cried out, “Come. Lord Jesus"—Christ's disciples of today at this, his second and final appearing, cry, Come. Lord Jesus. and they hear, “Be- hold 1 come quickly, and my reward is with me.” Spiritualized thought reveals this “reward,” to be a wholly spiritual = consciousness, which will disclose * the heaven and earth of God's creating, “in which “is “no sickness, sorrow, mnor death,” for the former thoughts, which produced death. “are ‘passed away.” | Christ Jesus said “I go.” but “I will come again.” He also left this comfort- ing assurance to his followers, “Heaven and earth shall pass away. but my words shall not pass away.” His discipl lieve him and are looking for his minent reappearing.
