30 STOCKS SHOW GAIN General Motors Moves in Unison to Point Way to Higher Levels. BY STUART P. WEST. al Dispatch to The Star. W YORK, June 11.—The two hl: stocks, commonly conceded to be the heads of the Morgan groups, were the leaders 4n the market to- day—United States Steel and Gen- eral Motors. On Wednesday steel common was the feature. Yester- day it was General Motors. But today the two stocks moved In unison and the conclusions drawn from this fact were such as to create @ more enthusiastic atmos- phere than has prevailed in Wall Street since the culmination of the January rise. 1t was nothing new to say about the United States Steel that it was probably in for extra dividends and that these might be expected at any quarterly meeting from now on. Big Public Demand. Statements to this effect appeared today to be more authoritative and there was the persistent thought of buying conducted on a very large seale. Probably on no da: SO far has there been such a public de- mand for a single stock as there was today for steel common. o The prospect of an extra stock divi- dend w the big influence. Such indications as have been noted of im- provement in the steel trade were of minor consequence, because they have not become pronounced. General Motors pushed into new high ground as it went through to 135%. The rise occurred in connec- tion with the inkling which have been coming in for several days about the expansion plan for the company. Naturall; it was reasoned that no such expansion program would be con- ridered were there not confidence in high banking and trade quarters in the future. More extra dividends were, of course, talked about in con- nection with the General Motors rise. Union Pacific Leader. In the railway section Union Pacific was the leader for the first time in a long time. It broke through its pre- vious high for 1926. The buying was based upon the attractiveness of the tnvestment vield plus the liberal safety margin back of the stock. Among the viher there were frac- »nal advances for a time in stocks ike Atchison. Atlaniic Coast Line, Chesapeake and Ohio, New York Cen- und Pere Marquette Jine was actively bought e of a point. NEW YORK, June 11.—Accom- panying a generally firm market, deal- ings in bonds today were character- ized by a serles of special upward movements. One or more issues in each group was singled out for at- tention. In the forelgn list it was Rhine- Westphalia Electric Power 7s. These closed yesterday at 97% and opened today around that price, but quickly advanced to par, which was the rec- ord high since they were first offered in November. 1925. Rhinelbe Union 7s, crossing 102, also moved into new high ground. Other German govern- mental and industrial obligations were favorably influenced by the strength in these two issu Missouri Pacific Leader. The leader in the railway group was again today, as in the previous session, Missouri Pacific General 4s. They had sold Thursday at the high- | est price in their history and today {they went a half point higher. Erle General 4s were heavily hought at a fractional advance and for the Ifirst in a long time International Great Northern Adjustments initiated an upward swing, responding to in- { dlcations of better earnings results Still another speculative railroad issue in demand was Chicago Great West- ern 4s. The New Haven bonds were steady but not materially higher. Industrials and utilities were more irregular. Brooklyn Union Gas 54 at 142 were up over 2 points on the conversion privilege. International Mercantile Marine 6s recefved better support and at 95 were at the high | & the recent recovery. Stockholders meet June 17 to take up the matter of the sale of the White Star Line to British interests.
