United states Steel common dominated the stock market today Transactions were enormous. At first the stock siid off nearly two points, then the b came in agaln and swept jt a with a rush which brought the highest prices for- the present- movement. as the afternoon went on There were all sorts of rumors con nected with the rise, the most popular heing that of a stock dividend 1] was purely speculative gossip. vet it was taken rather serionaly in fairly onsible circles ""I‘)‘l»nfz\l'\\al'd sweep in United States Steel did not bring back any bix <peculation to the general share list For the most part the market was strong, but the advances were small Motor shares rallied in the late trad ing after a poor start The selling in the motors was most apparent in Willys-Overland. which at ane time was down over a point, and in Hudson, Mack Trucks and Plerce- | Arrow common. Considerable discu Sion continued regarding the possi- hilities of something being done on the back dividends on Pierce-Arrow pre- ferred and the stock was higher Run-up in Sugar Transitory. Yesterday's run-up in the sugars lonked for a while to have heen only transitory, but later, under the lead of South Porto Rico, the whole sugar list picked up. The quick sale of the Southern Cal offered 9815, to yield 5 helpful factor. 0 per cent. was a 'he new bonds sold at more than a half-point premium in the outside market. United States jovernment obligations held vester. day’s gains. with the Treasury 3%s duplicating the year's high. The better grades of utilities were in good demand. especially the Mil- waukee Railway and Light bonds. the 6s of 1953 advancing into new high ground. There was more {rregularity among the higher ylelding railroad issues; but prices were well sustained. The New Haven Missouri Pacific and Western Maryland obligations were in particularly good demand. Erie con A feature in the industrial group was the remarkable advance in An- tilla Sugar 7138, which, at 90. were 5 points up from their recent low, International Telephone and Tele graph 5138 sold down again. At 109 they had lost more than 4 points from the price before the offering of new stock was announced. Youngstown Sheet and Tube 63 were off fraction ally, but Central Steel 8s went up a point. While prices were not greatly changed interest in the local tractions appeared to he increasing.
