On the other hand, black and Circassian walnut and mahogany Bo artistically together, also mahog- any and cherry, especlally when both the mahogany and cherry are finished in the same tone, either the red or brown shades which are typical. Do not think because the wood goes by one name that any finish of it can be put correctly with any other. Take oak, for instance, with its varied finishes. Flemish oak and golden oak are as {incorrect together as black walnut and golden oak. So we find the color of woods of great import- ance vhen we consider correctness in decoration. Informal Furniture. Willow rattan, reed wicker, by what- ever name we call furniture made from pliable fibers or strands of wood, has gained a fortunate place for itself because articles made of almost any of its various forms can be combined with practically any wood. This is partly because it can be stained or painted to fit in with the color schemes of rooms, and partly because it does not come under any classifica- tion of wood. It is a distinct type of furniture and an occasional piece of it is permissible in rooms that are not formal, though it is decidedly out of place in either formal rooms or those done in period style. It is a furniture accenting informality. On the other hand, gold furniture and much of the French furniture is S0 exquisite and delicate that it is Just the thing to use in dainty re- 3802 T Street N.W. 3806 T Street N.W. ception rooms and music rooms, state- ly drawing rooms and rooms where decoration, purely, is of paramount importance. ~ Such furniture is too fragile to stand hard usage, too orna- mental to combine with stanch pieces, however excellent the lines of the latter may be, and it does not fit in the usual type of American houses. The French are dainty and exquisite, whether it comes to clothes or furni- ture and furnishings. There is an artistry about their interior decoration quite apart from the cozy, livable characteristics demanded by average Americans in their homes. Do Not Go Together. Craftsman, art and crafts and mis- slon types of furniture, with straight, uncompromising lines, bear a certain similarity to each other, but to few other styvles. " So we find in classifying our furniture and setting it apart for certain rooms that we should put this sort of furniture in one room. Another pronounced style of furni- ture that seems to require an atmos- phere of its own is the mid-Victorian. Perhaps some of you will not recog- nize it by this name, but all of you know it, for it is the kind so much in vogue about 50 years ago. Most homes have some pieces. Black wal- nut was the favorite wood, and it was ornamented with various motifs of fruit and flowers and geometric de- signs carved and stuck on to bulky frames. Unfortunately, black walnut, a really flne wood in itself, and ex- pensive today, fell into disfavor be- cause it became so associated with dinky ornaments on massive pieces. J. C.
