B. cha The development of The Star's model row houses at West Virginia avenue and Queen street northeast has now advanced to the point where #_ comprehensive idea of the com- pleted operation may easily be’ visu- alized. All structural work is now com- plete and the plastering is pros ressing as rapldly as possible for the attainment of a good job. It might be well to call attention herd to the fact that exireme care has heen taken by the builders to elim- inate cracks in the plaster caused by ‘the shrinkage of wood used in the structure. Tt is a well known fact that wood, even though well seasoned stock 1is obtainable, is hound to swell and shrink as it absorbs molsture from the atmos- Vaughn. Julius Stambaugh. This shrinkage is pronounced across the grain of a timber while it is negli- gible lengthwise. length of these pieces, usually of one- inch material and elght inches wide. are nailed to these to make the rise noticeable. Therefore, where the two come together cracks will oc- cur in the plaster, which is not an nlastic material, unless something is done to prevent them. In this job all such joints are covered with metal lath, thereby holding the joints securely and distributing the shrink- age over such a large area that the ordinary cracks will not occur. Also partitions are, wherever possible, carried on the partition below or masonry wall, thereby eliminating shrinkage to the fullest extent. Patented hardwall plaster is being used throughout, which gives a bet- ter job in much less time than the old-fashioned slacked lime method. Attention has been directed before | to the fact that all mechanical equipment pipes and conduits have been installed and as soon as the cement base for the tile floors is poured in the hathrooins the plumbers will begin placing the fixtures. Shower baths, unusual in houses of this type, are being installed in all bathrooms, over the bulltin bathtubs, and will be tiled up to full height. Interior Trim Next. The next operation will be the in- stallation of interior trim, which is now being milled from special tails, also unusual in this work. The table and bench equip- ment has already been put in the kitchen This is another featu which 1d_to_the _comfort _and Papering—]| nlnlink;Awnhgs | There is no iob you want done too small for us to handle.
