In which occurred between t January and the first speculative excesse Autumn and early Winter were ddne. Overextended accounts liguidaied and stocks passed stronges hands. This reformation of conditions of May heen disclosed during the last four weeks. There has been no essential change In business conditions. There has been a suggestion of & profitable situation in steel and oll. (he maintenance of favorable compari- <ons in railway earnings and In the ‘olume of distributive trade. But in all this there is very little difference from eight months. ago. “The upward movement today cen- tered upon industrial shares of the <pecialty type. 'The main advance oc curred in stocks like Postun Cereal. Allied Chemical, General Rallway Sig- nal. Vick Chemical, United States Cast Tron Pipe, Pathe. General Electric Remington Typewriter. Unlon Bag and Paper and Woolworth. The trad fng In the low-priced Electric Boat was active on the way up. On the ather hand the campaign in Interna tional Combustion appeared to have met with something of a check. Railway equipment shares were not s prominent as they had been. The Greater New York tractions, taking in Interboro Rapid Transit and Third Avenue, were up slightly. Oil shares s a rule were fractionally higher, but there was not enough activity in this direction to call for much attention. Steel stocks were higher, but here, too. the upward turn was moderate. Crucible ran up over a point, Youngs- town Sheet and Tube nearly the same. United States Steel around 126 was selling nearly 5 points above the low of a week ago and 9 points above its Jow figure of the year. Railway stocks were in the main higher. Particular Interest was taken in the Van Sweringen group because of the rumors which have been going around for some time about a new merger plan. Chesapeake and Ohio did not do so much, but Pere Mar- auette was up and the Erles were quite strong. Buying of New Haven, which had been such an incident on preceding days, continued. It was based upon the wonderful showing which is being made in current earn ings. The April net surpassed any- thing known in recent years. TEXAS CO. PURCHASES SOUTHWESTERN CONCERN Midland Securities Completes Deal for $13,000,000 Buffalo Firm, It Is Announced Today. By the Associated Press EW :YORK. June 4-—Control of the Southwestern Petroleum Co.. in volving the acquisition of its produc ing properties and all other assets, has been, obtained by the Texas Co., It was announced today. The deal, it is understood, was handled through the Midland _Securities Co., which pur- chased tie Southwestern Co.'s stock trom the estate of George A. Forman of Buffalo. BUFFALO, N. Y., June 4 (#).—The stock of the Southwestern Petroleum Co. has been-sold to the Midland Se- curities Co. of New York, of which John H. Harris is president, it was announced today by counsel for the nil company. The sum of $13,000.000 is said to have been Involved in the transaction. The company was organized here in 1901 by the late George A. Forman of this city. Much of the stock was held by Mr. Forman and the sale is the result of the desire on the part of the executors to liquidate his holdings for distribution among the heirs, the atorneys said. The chief production fields of the Southwestern company are in Okla- homa and Kentucky. The company also has holdings in Kansas, Tex: and Wyoming. a BALTIMORE ARRIVALS. BALTIMORE, June 4 (Special).— Arrivals at the port of Baltimore for the month of May were 160 vessels. representing 13 countries. The United States led with 65 steamers, 1 ship and 3 schooners, the total falling be. lew the figures for April. Great Brit- ain followed with 31 steamers, an in- erease over the previous month, and Norway galned. by having 28 arrivals. Anglo-Chilean Nitrate 7s sold down early in the day but later rallied. A new $15.000.000 offering of De. troit Edison General and Refunding 78 due in 1955 will be made early next week. Opening unchanged to half nt up, the wheat market quickly scored general gains. Reports were current that Germany was facing a grain famine and there were aiso ad- vices that much wheat in Nebraska is heading short. Corn and ocats were corn opening unchanged to | 1 -cent higher. and then showing a sag. Provisions scored a decided up turn. Special attention was given to a statement from a trade authority here that although it has been a popular helief. that after May deliveries the cash wheat market would sink down to the price of July. the reverse has happened.
