An oil-electric type of locomotive is being tried out by the large rafireads of the country, as it shows possibili- ties of being much less costiy to op- erate. X A study shows that the operating cost of the oil-electric type during one month of observations was $72.58, as compared with $349.46 for an old type of steam locomotive doing the same kind of work. The fuel cost will be one-third to one-sixth of an iva- lent steam locomiotive, it is believed.
