WDAF FIFTEEN MINUTES OF RADIO EACH DAY BY JOSEPH C. Noted Authorif ALCATERRA ty on Radio. All Rights Reserved. Reproduction Prohibited. Broadeasting Acoustl It you ever get the chance to visit a broadcasting studio by all means do so. Tt will give you a greater appreciation of the apparent simplic- ity of a system that performs such miracles of speech transmission. Do not go into a broadcasting studio, however, with the idea of hearing wonderful renditions of vocal and instrumental selections at first hand by listening to the performers in the room in which they do their stuff. If you have been pleased at the mellowness of the sound which comes from your loudspeaker as you sit before your receiver you will be dis- agreeably surprised at the deadness of the sounds which you hear in the broadeasting studio. Music Sounds Dead in Studio. ' The reason why a selection sounds dead when played at the broadcast- ing station studio, but sounds wonder- fully well when it issues from the loudspeaker is due to the precautions {aken at the station to prevent re- flection of sounds and reverberations at the studio. In the studio heavy drapes are hung from the walls, spe- cial padding lines the ceiling, all to absorb all the sound that strikes them and prevent _its reflection to the microphone. In some studios special- Iy treated walis that absorb sound are used in place of heavy drapes. -If you are ever in one of these studios— that is, the type whose walls look no different from the walls you see in an ordinary house—just touch the walls and notice how they yield to even the slightest ssure. These walls are lined with felt “&nd cov- ered with a wax-treated muslin. They absorb the sound waves that strike them and prevent the reflection of sound to the microphone. Sound ¥s Absorbed., 1t this sound were not absorbed it would be reflected to the microphone and would cause reverberation, the effect produced by the combination of the echo with the original sound. This would produce a distorted sound be and would destroy the quality of the program. A certain amount of reverberation is necessary, but too muck' will cause the hollow and indistinct sounds such as are heard in large auditorfums which have poor acoustic properties. 1t all listening in were done with headphones it would not be necessary to be so careful to avoid all reverber- atlon at the studio, because then only the reverberation at the studio would be transmitted to the ears of the lis- teners. Where loudspeakers are used, however, there is reverberation in the room in which the loudspeakeris used, and if this were added to the reverberation from the studio poor quality would result. Since the grea er number of recelvers use loud-] speakers, broadcasters have found it necessary to eliminate reverberation at the broadcasting station, allowing the reverberation at the receiving end to provide the amount necessary to get fully rounded sounds. This is but one of the phases of broadcasting technique about which most listeners know nothing. STUDY “ME “MELTING POT.” Scientists to Check Up Results of Racial Mingling in U. 8. EW YORK, May 24 (#) ica’s “melting pot” is to be the sub- Ject of study by experts, to throw sclentific light on the problem arising from the mingling of many different races. The equipment has been constructed by the Northern Electric Co. and will be operated by the Halifax County Radio Associa- tion. Call letters CHNS, designed to indicate “Canada.
