BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 15.—First selling of Polish bonds featured the trading today in the bond market. Both Polish 8s and Polish 6s dipped to new lows. The declines were registered, however, undera comparatively small volume of offerings and there was no evidence of any sympathetic re. action in the obligations of other cen- tral European countries. French and Italian issues were still heavy, but that was due to other causes. French Cities 6s got down be. low 85, or lower than at any time this week. | The Warner Sugar issues, which had such a severe break yesterday, sold around the record lows, although for most of the time there was sup- port at this level. Punta Alegre 7s advanced a point, standing out as a strong issue in the group. There was also & runup to a record high in Cen tral Steel §s, an ordinarily inactive bond | Among the oils the leader was Gen- eral Petroleum’s 58, which also reach. ed a new high price at par. Buying was evidently founded on the idea that this hond I8 now in effect an obliga- tion of the Standard Oil Co. of New York. Today's leader of the specula- tive rails was Chicago Great Western 4s. Missourl Pacific General 4s held steady, around their new high, made late Friday. The general investment domestic list was firm, but quiet. Among Gov- ernment bonds, Treasury 3%s and Liberty fourth 41%s sold just below their record high point. In the rail way group Louisville and Nuh\-me| 4138 were strong. | STERLING EXCHANGE RETURNS TO PARITY Gold Value for First Time Since 1914. | By the Associsted Press. NEW YORK. May 15.—Sterling ex- change sold at gold parity ($4.865) in the New York market today, for the first time since 1914. Cables on London wers quoted at $4.86% soon after the opening, that figure previously having been reached in the London market. 8 While the return of sterling to par. ity was regarded as only a question of time when Great Britain returned to the gold standard last year, the sud- den attainment of the goal came some- what as a surprise to local dealers in foreign exchange 1 In some quarters the rise in ster ling was regarded as an indication of a heavy transfer of funds from Italy. France, Belgium and other countries with depreciated currencies to Eng land and the United States, where the | gold standard is effective. In other quarters the buying was attributed to British government sources as part of a plan to attract gold to that country. French francs sank to a new low record at 3.01!'3 cents, and Belgian francs wers 4 points lower, around 3.01 cents, but Italian lire railied sev- eral points to 3.431; cents. BANK CLEARINGS.
