» TRADING IS LIGHTER - IN STOCK MARKET Further Advances Made, But Many Shares Decline. Rails Inactive. BY STUART P. WEST. Spacial Dispatch to The Star NEW YORK, April 30 market rallied somewhat after a period of weakness. The comeback was most pronounced In the seasoned dividend paying rail Teads, but there was some short cov ering in the American Woolen stocks and in Marine preferred. which. how ever, still left these issues with losses on the dav. Western Union was prominent on the buying side in the last half hour The conclusion. therefore that the market still lav entirely pro- fessional hands. Stocks which went up did so not-for reasons connected with the general business situation, bhut because of special c iderations. Prliminary estimates on oil com panies’ reports are favorable, and this has been reflected in a fair degree of strength in the oil stocks. These stocks for the most part were higher today. Other stocks, and General Electric ikewise for special reasons. But the main point is that these individual upward moves have failed to stimu late the general trading. Stocks were strong during the first hour or so today, then i was quite plain that they were being freely supplied ind the afternoon market showed the “ftact. American Woolen stocks were vory weak for reasons which have long seen known. - Despite statements made al various times that the tex tile industry was on the mend. the facts are that conditions in the trade have not improved. Woolen manufac iurers canno: get their prices up sufficiently to offset increased costs. This has been the position for the iast four vears and it has not been changed except temporarily for short periods. American Woolen common hroke below 24. whereas the previous low had been 28%. American Woolen preferred, well under 70, compared with the previous low of 1 CLOSING IRREGULAR. DEBT ACTIONLIFTS | [Coxmov vomx BONDS socsreemwver] FRENCH BOND LIST, Speculation Centers in New York Tractions—I. M. M. Issue Still Feature. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 30.—Signing of 251 | war debt agreement between France 17 10% 24 119% 33 %| and the United States late yesterday was followed today by a sharp up- ward movement in French dollar bonds. The strength which had de- veloped in these issues in the last half hour vesterday had fore- shadowed the action at Washington, and so the continuation of the up- ward trend at the start today was not unexpected. All the French issues, with the ex- ception of Bordeaux, Lyonsand Mar- seille 6s, opened higher, and French 78 and French 8s went to new highs for the year. Buying was almost per- sistent in the 7s. The 728 opened up over a point below the high of late February. French railway bonds went along with the obligations of the icentral government. ¥rench Na- tional Mail Steamship 7s at 83 were at a new 1926 top. The local tractions were the most prominent issues speculatively. In terboro bonds were as active and strong as on any day since the pres- ent advance began. The refunding 58 were taken in large volumes at con- tinuously increasing prices. ~ One hlock of $125,000 per value changed hands at 74, against a preceding close of 734. The 6 per cent notes geined over a point. Current estimates of Interboro earnings for the year end ing June 30 next have peen ralsed until it is now predicts that $5 a share will be showr for the stock. Third Avenue refunding 4s and New York Raillway income 6s went up in sympathy with the Interbore issues. Fluctuations in the Marine 6s were wide again. The trend today was downward. Truders seem unable to make up their minds as to the stat of the bonds after the proposed sa of the White Star Line. The high-grade investment group was in general unchanged as to price. but more active. Special interest was A Jo, FR 1DA Y. APRIL 30, 1926. W Received by Private Wire Direct to The Star Office. OUTLOOK IN FERTILIZER TRADE CONTINUES GOOD Special Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, April 30.—Outlook for the local fertilizer industry con- tinues good, according to reports from local plants. Sales have been in greater volume than last year, and in some cases have exceeded those of the last sev eral years. [t is difficult to form a clear idea as to just how well the situation will look at the end of the season. inasmuch as the late season has retarded_sales at many points. There is a general feeling of opti mism regarding the trade, however, s [ 2nd according to officials of some of i the Baltfmore firms the sftuation is more favorable than it has been for several years. . The Chesapeake and Potomac Tele: phone Co.’s report of operations for March to the Public Utilities Commis sion shows increases in revenue, ex- pense and net income reflecting the three additional working days in March as compared with February This accounts principally for the fact that March net income was $154 as against $126,934 for the month of Februar: March taxes amounted to $50,305, as against $40.11 for March, 1925.
