CONSTAS TELLS OF ANCIENT SURGERY 01d Greeks Used Instruments Sim- ilar to Modern Ones, He Says, in Giving Tablet. As far back as a thousand years before Christ, surgeons in Greece used instruments practically the same as are used by surgeons at this time, i D: ¢, FRIDAY, APRIL 9o 23, 1926. according to Dr. John Constas, of this city, a member of the Georgetown University faculty of medicine, in an address Wednesday night before the Medical Society of Washington in the quarters of the latter. Dr. Constas’ discussion of medical science in ancient days followed his presentation to the society of a replica of a marble slab, nearly 3,000 years old, the figures of which depict Aescalapius operating on a patient. The original of this interesting slab, was excavated from one of the numer- ous Aescalapia or Sanitoria, once existing in Greece, and is sald to have once adorned the walls in the oracle Dodona in Southwest Greece.
