Thursday—Midweek Serv A New Old First Presbyterian The Cradle of Washington Presbyterianism Over a Century of Service John Brittan Clark, Pastor This old church began in 1795 on the White House grounds in a carpenter shop. Then for years it met in a basement room of the Capitol used by the Supreme Court. Here was served the first Communion. the present site was secured on John Marshall Place and for 100 vears this old church has served Washington at this location. Notable figures: of history have tended this church—Jackson, Polk, Pierce, Webster, Clay, Buchanan, Grant, Ihnl'uml Harding's last public service in Washington was in this church on May 30, 1923. Now this historic church is purchasing a new site in a growing residence community at Massachusetts Avenue and 36th Street N.\V., where another century of service will be rendered to a growing population. Tomorrow all members 1 all the old friends of First Church are asked to make a pledge on a 40 months’ basis to purchase this new site. The amount needed is $45,000. .
