30 % BEARS RAID RAILS AND FORGE BREAK Rally Following Selling of Early Trading Fails—Many Issues Down. BY STUART P. WEST. ®pecial Dispatch to The Star NEW YORK, March New low prices for the - e made all s Through the Stock Exchange list to- was heavy selling under the snfluence of the uncovering of stop- Joss orders and of aggressive oper: tions for the decline. T some of them, I atd certain of n-Anterica The last named it fell below 0. had a bad smash, ter support for Industrial specialties, wore very wed The murket sed Wottom, with active selling was hea Huds but there was eneral Motors some of them, almost at the still in ts to the effect that banking s were active on the long side had only a temporary effect in check inz the decline. There was nothing in the outside news to account for the drastic sell- ing that came into the market for railway stocks, The lway group was not so much affected as was the industrial section of the market on the preceding day. Bears Attack Rails. The element worhing for lower prices concentrated their efforts in this section of the market today and in_forcing prices down a point to as much as 5 points fn some of the high-priced issues. Atlantic Coast Line slipped off easily. Coca Cola, which had been the one 20 resist selling pressure better than others during the recent downward wmovement in the market generall et little support today end was seil- ing substantlally lower with the rest. Even those shares involved in the Proposed Greater Loree System bore their share in the decline. The selling of the steel stocks was pot as pronounced. Large blocks of United States Steel common were zaken around 119%, early in the ses- sion, which represented a gain of a %alf point from the Monday final. But this was subsequently lost when 1he market turned weak again in the mfternoon. Publication of the annual yeport of the Sloss-Sheffield Steel and Tron for 1925 had a favorable effect upon the market for that stock. Earn- ings for the common after deductions for depreciation, depletion and taxes were equal to §15.09 a share on the common, compared with $10.47 in 1924, Some Well Sold. Shares of companies in which pools are known to have been active and have suffered severely, as a result of the recent bear campalgn, appeared 10 have been pretty well liquidated around today's low prices. Postum Cereal was subjected to fur- ther heavy liguidation at the outset, but later recovered. Allied Chemical and Dye, which was carried down miore than 6 points on Monday, rallied across 109, where it was more than a point higher. The equipments gave a better account of themselves than they have for some time, but no effort was made to continue the recovery. CLOSING IS WEAK. Peluge of Selling Orders Descends on Market in Final Hour., NEW YORK, March 30 (#).—The closing was weak. The deluge of sell- ing orders poured with unrelenting fury upon the market throughout the late dealings. United States Steel was carried below 118 to the lowest prices of the year, and scores of other in- dustrials and ralls were battered 3 to 10 points, to 1926 nrinimum figures. Atlantic Coast Lines extended its break to 9 points and Jersey Central 10 10 points. Total sales approximated 3,000,000 shares. Markets at a Glance Foreign ex- sharp break sends Bel- nc to new low.
