FIFTEEN MINUTES OF RADIO EACH DAY BY JOSEPH ILCATERR A Noted Authority on Radio All Rights Reserved. 8. L. F. Condensers Are Not Cure-Alls. So much has been written ahout straightline frequency condensers that many fans believe them to be cure alls for all selectivity troubles in radio receivers, The straightline frequency condenser is not a magic wand which will eliminate all trouble from a re ceiver. The primary function of this type of condenser is to separate the stations on the lower end of the tuning dial, in other words, it gives better separation with a wider spacing of divistons on the dial f« those stations which are tuned in on the lower end of the dial. A straightline frequency condenser cannot be expected to increase the inherent efficiency of a set. As far efficiency factors other than that of ease of adjustment are concerned, the straightline frequency condensers are no better than straightline wave- length or stralghtline capacity con- densers of similar make. A glven amount of capacity can be obtained by eny good make of condenser re- gardless, whether it be a stralghtline frequency, a struightline wave-length or a straightline capacity condenser. Tunes With Equal Efficiency. With that given amount of capac- ity a certain station can be tuned with equal efficlency on any of the condensers mentioned. The bid fc fame of the straightline frequency condenser lies in the fact that adjust- ments are not so critical as they are With the straightline wave-length type and much less critical than with the straightline capacity types. " Since it helps in tuning, a straight- line frequency condenser is a desir- able instrument to have in a receiver. Do not, however, expect such con densers to change an inefficient set into an efficient one. Makes Great Tmprovement. Substituting high-grade condense! or transformers for poor ones will make a great improvement in the set, but the substitution of straicht line frequency condensers for aight- line wave-length or straightline ity condensers will only make the set Reproduction Prohibited * »* * * »* 3“' can fake care of vour radio » i H easler to tune. Straightline frequency condensers are very desirable in a receiver, but. do not substitute them in u reeceiver and expect to tune in far distant stations when all you have been able to get with the set so far are the local stations. and straightline frequency condensers special e must e exercised in se- lecting _the dixls to be used with them.
