Patrick (this is his day, yvou re- call) has been spoofing all his admirers these long years about driving the snakes out of Ireland, if Dr. Mann is to be believed. The truth of the mat- ter, Dr. Mann ventured to say today, is that there never were any snakes in Treland for anybody to drive out! “Irish spakes?” Dr. Mann repeated in answer to an innocent query by 2 Star reporter. “There is no such thing. Ireland has no snakes. It never had.” “'But St. something. didn’t persisted, aghast Indulges Only In “Facts.” “That’s what the old myth. as am- plified by vou newspaper men, savs, but 1T am not talking myths. 1 am talking facts.” “Isn't it possihle that the reason there are no snakes In Ireland is be cause St. Patrick got busy and eradl- cated them?"” There were never any snakes in Ireland. so far as [ ever have heard.” Dr. Mann repeated, with a tone of finality and firmness. In other words, thesdirector of the National Zoological Park and head of the - Chrysler-Smithsonian big-game expedition to Africa rontends that if there were snakes in Ireland at any time they existed in the imagination of St. Patrick’s admirvers. He admits that there are Scotch snakes nearby, hut they stay in their own bailiwic Persons sometimes fancy they xee Scoteh snakes in divers other locali- ties, it was pointed out, but Dr. Mann refused to comment on this angle. William S. Walsh, an authority on legends and popular customs, writes that “So many conflicting legends have been put into this atory that it is now generally assumed there were two or more St. Patricks who have been rolled into one.” There was “one commanding personality toward ‘whoi 1l the myths naturally gravi- tated,” however, Walsh says, and this Patrick was born about 38 A.D. He was carried away from England by pirates when 16 and sold as a slave in the north of Ireland. There he be- came a missionary and bishop among the heathen. ‘The legend has it that 8i. Patrick did his snake chasing with a large drum, with which he raised a racket, no end. Then he preached a sermon that sent the varmints scurrying in all directions. It was very simple. But now comes Dr. Mann with his daring scientific assertion. This may be irrelevant, but a fact that the doctor is hurrying preparations for his departure for Africa. it is Legion Post Plans Dinner.
