FEATURES. HOME NOTES BY JENNY WREN. The English house has gained con- ®iderable populartiy in American cltles because it adapts itself so well to the narrow lot. It achieves inter- est through its many irregularities, mnd charm through the mellow beauty ©f the varied materials used. Its lines, ®Both in plan and elevation, have a Pleasing lack of regidity. A garage mechanic complains that he has developed a frequent headache since he started working in a small service station where automobile en- gines are often r But he also works over storge batteries under charge and he attributes his trouble to the fumes from the botteries. All of these men are most probably victims of carb nixid poisoning. ‘This gas is alw; esent in the ex- haust from a gasoline engine. Carbon monoxid itself is odorless and colorless, invisible, and a surprisingly small pro- portion of it in the air one breathes will quickly overcome the victim and it he is not immediately rescued death is swift. The man who enters a small garage on a cold morning and runs his auto- mobile engine for a while to warm it up takes a very long chance unless the garage door and window oppo- site the door are kept wide open all the time. No apparatus is necessary or desirable for artificlal respiration. The effect of slight carbon monoxid gassing, as in the instances above cited, is difficult to reorgnize. There is no accurate test of slight carbon monoxid poisoning available. One rather suggestive sign observed in such cases is a full quota of red blood corpuscles, or maybe an increase over the normal, in spite of the apparent pallor and apparent anemia of the pa- tlent. Among the more common complaints of men presumably suffering from oc- cult, unrecognized or mild carbon monoxid poisoning incident to their work, gre frequent dull headache, pal- lor, digestive impairment, an uneccus- tomed languor or weakness, and an unaccustomed downheartedness, irrita- bility or peevishness—nervous exhaus- tion, many victims like to call it. Probably a great many cases of oc- cult carbon monoxide polisoning are wrongly dlagnosed, especially when the possibility of the exposure in not obvious in the patient's history.
