By the Assoclated Press. CHICAGO, February 25.—Despite an early show of strength, the wheat market today soon underwent a de- cided setback. New crop deliveries displayed the most weakness, plenti- ful moisture for domestic Winter wheat being a bearish factor. On the other hand, it was contended that prospective steady exports of durum wheat would indicate larger de- creases hereafter in the United States visible supply, and that July dellvery in this country is on a good export relationship, .even aside from chances of crop scares and exhausted reserves. The opening, % lower to % higher, May (new), 1.67% to 1.67%, and July, 1.44% to 1.45%, was fol- lowed by a moderate general advance and then by a drop to well below yes- terday's finish. Damp weather and scantiness of corn receipts led to higher prices for corn. After opening unchanged to 5 up, May, 79 to 7914, the corn mar- ket scored material gains. Oats sympathized with corn. Start- ing unchanged to 3 higher, May, 41% to 41%, oats prices continued to harden. Influenced by lower quotations on hogs, the provision market was weak. GRAIN AND PROVISIONS. NEW YORK, February ber prices, which have been s declining since the first of the ve today broke as much as 2 cents pound for some options on the Rub ber Exchange of New York, bringing current prices 413 to 6 cents a pound below last week's closing levels. President F. R. Henderson of the exchange in a review of the situation attributes the softening price ten- dency to the conservation program of American manufactures following the marking up of the prices in Lon don last Winter to above $1 a pound for Spring delivery. This has been accomplished in two ways, by the larger use of reclaimed rubber and by the partial abandonment of a plan of extending credit until Spring on large quantities of tires shipped dur- ing the Winter months. Heavy liquidation for the account of London speculators has been an. other factor in the decline of prives. ey BUTTER UNSETTLED.
