Liens Up—Treasury Fours Gain—But Few Wgak Spots Noted. BY GEORGE T. HUGHE! Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, February 18—Rail- | way issues were more prominent in | today’s bond trading. Speculatively, the feature was the rapid advance in Chicago and Alton 3148, which, cross- ing 57, was at a new peak for the year. The commonly accepted explanation wus that the rise forecast merger de- velopments, the Frisco-Rock Island System and the Loree Southwestern being mentioned as possible There was also the possibility : reorganization, under which these 314 per cent bonds would he un- disturbed. Chicago Great Western 4s was another strong railroad issue, which at 68 was up a point on the day and also at a new high. Western Maryland 4s duplicated the high of the day hefore. In higher grade railroad obligations, Rock Island refunding 4s were in ac- tive demand, ad: level of 1 - ash 54s galned a 13 point, and Southern Pacific refund- ing 4s was higher. Atchison general 4% and Terminal Railway Association of St. Louis 45 went up slightly. So did Norfolk and Western divisional 4s. United States Government bonds were steadv. with the most interest shown iIn the Treasury, 4s. The $12,000.000 Otis Steel first 6s. of fered today to vield 6.16 per cent. were oversubscribed. Other new issues included $17.500.000 Pacific Mills five year 513 per cent notes to vield 6.2 per cent and $5,000,000 State of Illi- nofs Highway 48 at par Pr St Car pf (7).
