CAMBRIDGE, Mass., February 18. —A hundred years ago the English as- tronomer, Sir William Herschel, show- ed that all the stars visible in the heavens formed a system the shape of a watch, or a grindstone, with the sun near the center. When we look out along the diameter of the grind- stone we see a great mass of stars which appear like a continuous stream of light to the unaided eye. This is | the Milky Way, or "Galaxy,” as the astronomer calls it; and to learn more of it, and hence of the universe of stars, of which the sun and its at- tendant planets form such a minute part, astronomers at the Harvard Col- lege Observatory here are now en- aged in making an extensive series of photographs of these star clouds. Can Determine Brightness. The method used depends on a fact discovered by Dr. Harlow Shapley, di- rector of the observatory, that cer- tain kinds of variable stars, which pe- riodically diminish in brilliance and then grow bright again, change more rapidly the greater their average brightness. This permits the astron- omer to find out how bright they ac- tually are. By looking at them with his telescope he can find out how bright they seem, and from the rela- tion of the actual and apparent mag- nitudes he can find their distances. These stars, called Cepheid varlables. are the ones being employed in the i v studies. The Cepheid variable stars, and to a lesser extent the long period varia- bles, afford valuable means of meas- uring great distances,” explains Dr. “With the perfection of photometric methods, it becomes pos- sible to analyze any part of the stellar system in which variables occur, out- lining its extent in various dimensions nd the frequencies of certain types of ars. The problem of the structure of the galactic system has been of special interest to me for several vears, and we have now perfected blans to place on a systematic basis part of the analysis of the Milky hree belts in the galaxy are being THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1926. By the Associated Press. UXBRIDGE, Mass., February 18.— Henry Ford has bought Longfellow’s famous village smithy. The Detroit manufacturer plans to add the old Taft blacksmith ‘shop on Chestnut Hill to his collection of old New England buildings_and imple- ments in the vicinity of Wayside Inn at_Sudbury. The blacksmith shop was pur- chased yesterday by W. W. Taylor for Mr. Ford from Louls Albee. who has owned the property for several years. The shop was built in 1787 by Japbet Taft, grandfather of the late Caleb Taft. It has among its im- plements a sling used in shoeing oxen, the only one in this vicinity in use up to 10 years ago, when Mr. Taft retired. The bullding has been photographed continually at Cam- bridge and at our branch station at Arequipa, Peru, with exposures of sufficient length to show stars to the seventeenth magnitude. Each one of the 200 flelds, which completely cover the Milky Way, will be photo- graphed over & period of four or five years from five to forty times annual- ly. The accumulated material will be sufficient, in general, to determine the light variations of all variable stars to the sixteenth magnitude, or fainter. More than a hundred new variable stars already have been found during the early stages of this work. We are particularly able to do this for we have suitable telescopes and an ex- tensive collection of early photo- graphs, and our staff has had long experience in measuring stellar brightness.” First Photos in 1850. The first photographs ever made of stars in the United States were made at the Harvard Observatory in 1850, and ever since the work has been continued so that now the observa- tory has a file of thousands of plates which are not duplicated at any other institution. Some of these are direct photo- graphs, others are spectra, which re- veal the composition of the stars and which were used in the compllation of the great Henry Draper Catalogue. ‘This monumental work lists over 225,000 stars, and gives their bright- ness, position and spectral type. Most of the work on it was done between 1911 and 1924, largely by Miss Annie Jump Cannon, the first and only woman to receive an honorary degree from Oxford University, in England, which was conferred in honor of her scientific achievement: - = ——— , G AP MM ), - An Unusual Value in a Dining Suite Ten piec es in Espano walnut and gumwood with two chairs and green lacquer interiors.
