BRIDGE TO UNDERGO SURVEY Committee of Board of Trade to Carefully Inspect Structure as to Its Safety. problem of preventing vehicles from golng over the side of the bridge and work out some scheme that will pre- clude these accidents. The Board of Trade has been on record for several years in advocating a new Calvert Street Bridge This structure, It was pointed out, wgs cordemned at one time as unsafe. However, after certain improvements, the Commissioners declared the bridge safe, and the board let the matter drop for a time. The recent accident and other mutters have led the com- mittee to beNeve that a survey should be made. If the committee finds it necessary they will recommend a new bridge. Alarmed at the troubles and prob- lems that have beset the Calvert Street Bridge in the past few years, the commiitee on bridges of the Washington Board of Trade will un- dertake its own survey to determine for its own satisfaction the safety of this structure. At a meeting of the committee, un- der Chairman George W. Offutt, a special subcommittee was appointed of men who have had experience in en- zineering and one of whom is a bridge ineer.
