CORN IS SURPRISE Offer of $1 Per Bushel in Ex- change for Merchandise Causes Big Jolt. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, January 9.—Corn has handed out most of the surprise de- velopments in the grain trade this week. The biggest jolt came from a sweeping offer to accept unlimited amounts of corn at $1.00 a bushel in exchange for merchandise. Largely as a result of this offer, the corn mar- ket this morning as compared to a week previous showed 173 to 2% cents gain, with wheat ranging from 5y cents decline to 1% advance, oats 34 cent up and provisions at a rise of 37 to 65 cents. Attention to the announcement of $1.00 a bushel as a barter basis for corn was heightened by widespread interest being taken in other mnotable efforts under way to hoist corn values Plans for Government measures to control surplus grain had been. con tinuing to recelve notice and to act as an encouragement to speculative buyers, and so likewise had agitation | to promote increased use of corn prod ucts, especially by removal of regula { tions burdensome to the derived from corn. It was only, however, after the was made a concrete reality in regard to farm machinery purchases that the corn market took a decided upward swing. Simultaneous with the rise {of the corn market came indications that commercial demand for corn was improving. Reports were also cur- rent that reductions in the pig crop were being evened up through cu tailed slaughtering of hogs, and that farm feeding of live stock may vet dis: pose of more corn this season than | was the case last vear Wheat prices were relatively weak. | owing more or less to reports of in creased pressure, hoth of Argentine and Australian new crop grain the other hand, signs of better mand from domestic mills were evidence, in feature in the oats market.
