r 10 ROGERS IS NAMED CASUALTY HEAD Newly Elected Board of Di- rectors to Make Hospital Among Best in City. Plans for maintaining and improv- ing Casualty Hospital took a definite form at a meeting yesterday afternoon when Dr. Joseph D. Rogers was elect- ident of a new board of di- which automatically took over the control and running of the institu tion. The meeting was held in the Nurses' Home of Emergency Hospi- tal. Other officers of the board are: Fran- cis R. Weller, vice president; Thomas P. Hickman, treasurer, and Mrs. W. W. Griffith, secretary The members of the board, including men and women of outstanding promi- nence in this clty, were named as fol- Jows: Stephen E. Kramer, assistant super- intendent of schools; Dr. Rogers, who besides being president of the new board is president of Stanton Park Hospital s R. Weller of the Weller ruction Co.; Thomas P. MUSIC THE PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA For the second program of the Phil- adelphia Symphony Orchestra in Washington this season at the Wash- Ington Auditorium yesterday after- noon, Mr. Stokowski brought a varied and unusual group of musical selec: tions with two fine sololsts, Thaddeus Rich, well known as concert master of the Philadelphia Orchestra for nearly 20 years, and a violinist of virtuoso qualities, and Carlos Salzedo, excellent harpist, also noted as an 2nergetic pioneer in the advance guard of modernists in music. Mr. Salzedo appeared in the dual role of composer and soloist, as his work, “The En- chanted Isie,” described as a symi- phonic poem for harp and orchestra, dedicated to the memory of Debussy, was the ultra-modern feature of the concert. Frankly, the audience did not take to this work at all. It is extremely impressionistic and the string choirs constantly remind one of Wagner in his most mystenjous moments, while many dissonances seem lfke uneasy Debussy passages seeking in vain for a peaceful resting place wherein they can sink to blessed oblivion. What melody there is, is fragmentary. Probably the full possi- bilities of the harp as a solo instru- ment were displayed in the perform- ance of the work. It is quite possible THE BVENING STAR, ORPHANS GUESTS ATLOCAL THEATER Thanksgiving Party Spon- sored by Stay and Crandall Playhouse Management.
