A sky pirate! With a quick glance at his bulging pack the old Saint cracked his whip in the air and away flew the reindeer, fast as a streak of light. The first house came into view and Santa urged his speedy reindeer faster and faster—but he wasn’t quick enough for the sky pirates. The airplane whirred louder and louder and closer till finally it swooped down right over the team and one of the pirates leaned out and snatched the reins from Santa’s hand! ‘The old Saint, thinking of the poor little boys and girls who would be heartbroken on Christmas morn- ing, fought bravely to protect their toys, but he was fighting against desperate odds and his only weapon was a little wooden sword snatched from the pa:k. “You funny old cartoon,” the sky pirates laughed at him, “don’t you know you’re out of date. Why kids don’t believe in you any more. That old chimney stuff doesn’t go with children who live in apartments. Do you think they believe you come down the radiator pipe?” Poor Santa! They took all his toys and whirred away into the sky—and as a final blow one of them threw the little toy airplane down to him “for a keep- sake.” The poor old man sat there in his empty sleigh, the lights of the houses ahead winking at him out of the darkness, reminding him of the hundreds of little boys and girls who had gone so happily to sleep and would wake the next morning to find only emnty stockings and Christmas trees without a single light.
