Telephoning to London from New York, a fantaste dream 20 years ago, apparently is to become a common- place within the next few months. The completion of the glant wire less station ut Rugby, England, which i to be used as one of the two switch- boards for transoceanic telephony, will complete the preparations for inaugu- rating a permanent telephone system between the United States and Great Britain. The other elements of the system will be the Radio Corporation of America station at Rocky Point, and the land wires of the American Tele- phone and Telegraph Co. in the United States and the land wires of the Brit- ish post office in England Recent reports emanating from the three organizations co-operating in the establishment of this new service Inti mate that the transoceanic phones will be offered to the public within a very short time. The fees for the use of the system, it l1s understood, will be nominal, approximately the| same as are charged for the trans- continental calls n the United States If the establishment of the service works out as planned the calls will be | completed with only a very little de- | lay and the audibility of the voices | will be almost as clear and loud as s | the case in the line telephony of to dav. Preparations for the creation of the transoceanic telephone have been con- | ducted for several years, and the orig- | inal agreement between the Amer- ican Telephone and Telegraph Co. and the Radio Corporation of America for the co-ordination of thefr respective services {s among the documents filed with the Federal Trade Commission, which 'is *Investigating the alleged “trust” of radio interests, As planned the nervice will be de- veloped until it Is within the reach of every telephone subseriber. FIFTEEN MINUTES O BY JOSEPH C All Rights Reserved. Pointers on Portables. Autumn weather will bring with it crisp davs that are not only ideal for motor trips but are also Just the thing for radio. Cooler weather means better reception over longer distances and It also means greater freedom from static Interference. Fitting up an automoblle for radlo is & simple matter If you know just what to use and how to use it. In the first place it is a very simple matter to use even a standard cabi- | net receiver in a car if there iy room enough to set the receiver on a back seat or under the dash of the car. Current and Aerial Problem There are several problems in con- nection with using a portable receiver in a car. The first is the matter of providing a suitable aerfal. The second is that_of providing the battery cur- rent. The third is that of getting a horn that {s not cumbersome. The problem of providing a suita- ble aerial and ground is not as diffi- cult as it esems. A few turns or lengths of wire stretched around the | top of the car will provide a good enough aerial for use with a good five-tube tuned radio frequency set. The frame of the car will form a good counterpoise ground. The loop aerial, of course, makes the most_suftable form of aerfal for a portable set, and wherever possible this form should be used. The horn is really the most bother- some feature of the whole arrange. ment, but even this necessary member can be fastened up in an out-of-the- way corner of the car. The battery problem is also not as difficult as it seems. Auto Battery Used The car battery can be used to supply the filamqut current for the tubes. A simple way of providing for this feature I8 to get a burned-out dash lamp and use the contacts of the lamp as terminals for the A bat- tery wires which are to be connected to the receiver. “A" battery current can then be supplied by merely re- moving your regular dash lamp and | inserting _the converted lamp base { necting the auto battery with the re celver terminals. The “B" and “C' battery can be carried in a small suit- case. A multiplug cord connector which can be permanently connected with the batteries in the sultcase and | by means of which the batteries can i be connected with the receiver ter-] {into the corresponding receptacle in | the receiver makes an ideal method of connecting the receiver and bat- teries together. Those who expect to use a portable set to any great extent should use . special case deslgned especlally for vortable recelvers. This case Is shown in the fillustration. It consists of a case into which a 7-by-18-inch panel can be fitted, a collapsible loud speak- e hern and_n_loon_nerinl which is ] {NAPOLEON ON THE AIR || This evening at nine o'clock (Waterman's hour) “Points of Progress,” now so eagerly looked for by radians, will be equally di- vided between an absorbingly in- teresting talk on Napoleon and| |music by Waterman's orchestra. | Hector Fuller, owner of “the vio-| Toneello voice,” will tell the story of the greatest military genlus of modern times—not the old and hackneyed tale of Austerlitz, Elba and Waterloo, but a newer recital | of Napoleon's influence on the then voung Republic of the United States. By the Associated Press, CHICAGO, October 21.—Elimination of atmospherics and interference caused by “man-made static” has been furthered within the last year or so through additional experiments with underground antenna for radio recep- tion. Several types of buried aerials have been designed with more or less success. Sxperiments conducted over & num. ber of years by several prominent radio men have developed that while an un derground antenna does cut down inter- ference, including that caused by some of the electrical inventions of man, there 1s & drop in volume. In addition it has been found that the directional qualities of such a pick-up system are more marked than with an antenna strung above the ground. Attempts are being made, however, to overcome these difficulties and a Chicago experimenter recently an- nounced he had improved the under- system to the point where | countered had been overcome. i The underground “aerial” consists of 2 buried wire, which has bean care- fully insulated so as to exclude damp- ! ness. Sometimes this wire is buried In the form of a spiral and at_others it ts laid in long trench. Greater success has attended the system when the Insulated wire is incased in a metal shield, which, of course, is grounded, glving what is known as a condenser effect aerial. This shield tends to keep from the recetver u large part of the static and other in- terference, permitting clearer recep- tion and at times louder signals. ‘With tho end of the season of re- ligious holidays, which are very fre- quent In Indla, the country is resum- tng its normal activities.
