..() FINANCIATL. ULLS INCONTRDL IN STOCK MARKET | Alr Reductn(15). Force Rails, Motors, Oils and Equipments to New Tops in Today’s Trading. BY STUART P. WES Epecial Dispaten to The St W YORK, October 20. in the stock market today distributed and trading iown to a more normal k ng several davs of reckless specula tion and vietent fluctuations, today’s Stock Exchange dealing assumed the character of a calm after a storm. The ils, some of the metal shares, several of the motors and related issues and # number 2 was more evenly got of the rails were bid up 2 points on the average. The diversion into the oils followed the publication of the Marland fig- sres for the third quarter. These r n excellent showing was a balance after i rest, depre- ciation and depletion. but before Fed- eral taxes, which worked out the equivalent of $2.87 a share, against $257 a shave the previous three wonths, For the nine months ended September 30 Marland earned $6.87. Marland stock, once hte buying got into it, went up very easily. rland Leads Oils. Other ofl shares did not have as much of an advance as Marland, but they were more active and stronger than for @ lonz while past. There were gains of 1 to 3 points all along the line, taking in Pan-American “B”, General Asphalt, Associated Ol Mid-Continent, Pacific Ofl, Atlantic refining. Standard of California and Texas Co., the last named getting ebove 50. ntiment toward the oils in general changed from skepticism to optimism because the Marland figures had been @ revelation to many. Numerous rails made new high prices for the present movement, among them New York Central, Louis- ville and Nashville, which at one time was up over 2 points; Southern Rail- way, which sold at the highest for all time, and Pere Marquette. Nashville and Chattanooga jumped. Change of Tactics. This change of tactics involved a much quieter market for stocks like General Motors, Studebaker and the rest which had been providing the feature last week and the week before. Interest turned to the oil group, the rails and to the railway equip- ments. In view of the wide popular hold- ings in the oils. the taking up of these stocks was calculated, more than any other development could possibly have done, to restore outside confidence in the general market. ‘The market for railway shares was | evidently getting readv for another series of favorable comparisons in the September traffic returns, which will be cominz in during the next few days. the buying had in view the possibility of dividend increases in such important roads as New York Central, Louisville and Nashville and Baltimore and Ohio. Copper Shares Stronger. Operations for the rise reached out to the coppers and into the shares of locomotive and car making companies, following reports, in the latter case, of considerable improvement in new husiness. This changing about from one set of stocks to another gave the buying movement a broader appear- ance. It was just the sort of thing which was calcuateld favoraby to in- fluence outside sentiment and check the selling tendency which reriously threatened as the result of the violent proceedings at the close of last week in the motor shares. MARKET CLOSES STRONG. Advance Gains Momentum in Last Hour’s Trading. NEW YORK, October 20 (£).—The sing was strong. INFOREIGN BONDS |Fresh Buying in Railroad Liens Also Noted—Liberty Loans Irregular. BY GEORGE T. HUGHE! | Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, October 20.—German 7s advanced to a new high in today’s active und generally firm bond market, of which forelgn bonds were the feature. The German 78 touched par for the first time in their history just before the close Monday. Other German oblgations were carried along, cuch as the German Agricul- tural Bank 7s. which got above 95 for the first time. Republic of Poland 8s were again in favor above 90, more than 4 points up from the low of the vear. Greek 7s had u sharp rise on comparatively small transactions. It was noticeable that French bonds did not share the improvement manifested elsewhere in the foreign list, but, on the other hand, they did not weaken, so far having displayed indifference to the reaction in French exchange. Norfolkk and Western convertible 6s were up in sympathy with the stock. All the convertible ofl bonds were | strong, one of the leaders being Sin- clair 65 and another Skelly 612s.
