TOKIO, October 20.—A statement by a government spokesman yesterday declared that Japan entirely approves of the idea of a second disarmament conference, as suggested in dispatches from the United States, but that there is seemingly little possibility that such a conference could be held in the near future, as a number of nations are not ready to participate at the present time. “Some further education of the peo- ple is necessary before such a con- | ference can be successful,” the state- ment said. “But the high cost of llv- ing in varfous parts of the world is leading people to realize that some- thing further must be done to de- crease the cost of government, and particularly of maintaining armies and i Premier Kato and Minister Shide- hara are said to be elated at the out- come of the peace conference at Lo- carno, at which the Tokio government had observers. NEW YORK, October 20.—The age- old dream of the alchemist is llfll nothing but a dream, a statement is- sued yesterday by the Scientific Amer- ican asserts. There is no fact now visible on the scientific horizon which threatens gold as a world standard of money, it Is found in experiments to test a report- ed discovery by Prof. Adolph Miethe of Charlottensburg Technical College, Germany, who announced in 1924 a process ~for the transmutation of quicksilver into gold. The experiments were conducted by Prof. H. H. Sheldon of New York Uni- versity and Roger Estey, a physicist, and others, the result bejng a ‘“‘com- plete failure to confirm the transmu- tatlon of mercury (quicksilver) into 80ld as announced by Prof. Miethe.” Identical steps were taken, even to ordering from Germany a special elec- tric lamp similar to the one used by Prof. Miethe, although the American sclentists belicved their lamp superior for the experiments. Prof. Miethe's process was reported ® exposing a small portion of pure mercury—the familiar liquid qulck-ll ver—to an intense electric arc inside & vessel of quartz.
