The assoclation renewed its pre- vious recommendation that a high school be located in the Brightwood section and the Matthew G. Emory estate, facing on Georgia avenue, be- tween Madison street and Concord avenue, was urged as a suitable site. The tract contains several acres of high ground at the crest of the Brightwood hill and was owned by one of the first mayors of Washing ton. The land s at the present time owned by his heirs. * The association also went on rec ord as opposing an increase in car fares on local street railway lines, which it is felt would follbw if the Washington Railway and Electric Co. is granted an increase on Burleith bus line from § to 10 cents, or five tickets for 45 cents, transfers to intersecting car and b lines to be issued only upon the payment of cash fares. The increase in fare is to be discussed at a public hearing Friday, October 23, at the District Bullding at 10 o’clock 4n_connection with a request for an extenslon of the Burleith bus line from Tenth and E streets, eastward to Capitol Hill via Union Station and return. More Modern Charter. William McK. Clayton presented a resolution which was adopted, indo ing the amendments to the act estal lishing and_providing for the main- tenance of the Free Public Library as proposed by the board of library trustees and requesting the District Commissioners to recommend to Con- gress prompt enactment “in order that the Public Library may have a more modern charter and thus enable it to move more rapldly toward furnishing the people of the District adequate library service now denfed them.” A request will be made for the closing during school hours of Ninth street. between Hamilton and Ingra- ham streets, pending the completion of the new Brightwood Park school, which has deprived the school chil- dren of the use of their plavground. The right of the people of the Dis- trict to vote for and elect members of the Board of Education was urged in a resolution unanimously adopted. Dr. Charles E. Ralph urged that trees be planted on _both Georgia avenue from Military road to Walter Reed Hospital. His suggestion was approved. The associatlon indorsed the pro- posed national stadium as outlined by Col. C. O. Sherrill, superintendent of public bufldings and grounds. A special committee was appointed, consisting of Elmer F. Johnson, chair- man: William McK. Clayton and George Francis Williams, to investi- gate the zoning of property west of Georgla avenue and north of Military road. A resolution of regret was adopted on the recent death of Mrs. C. Lee Osborn on motion of Capt. L. J. Stoll. Mrs, Thomas H. Millenberg was elected a member of the association.
