August biulding permits in 75 South ern cities, distributed over 12 ehowed an increase of about § 000, or 51 per cent, over August, This was the second largest August increase of any region of the country, being proportionately exceeded oniy by 188 Bewewrn cities, according to the national monthly building survey of 8. The August total for the 75 Southern cities was $51,062, This was not only a large increase over last August, but also over July of this year, and it was by far the greatest volume of building ever reported-in these Southern cities for one month. Seven of the 12 States showed gal: in¢luding Alabama, A Wwhich had a gain of over $15,500,000; Mississippi, South Carolina Clearwater, Fla., which was for the first time reported in the S. W. Straus & Co. survey, had an August increase of 1166 per cent, the highest propor- tionate gain of any place in_the country. The 25 leading Southern clties ‘as a unit had a total of $43,782,000, a gain of 7 per cent over Shows Activity. Douglass and Phillips, Inc., report the consummation of the sales total- ing $138,100.
