JW YORK, Septeniber $.—The stock market on the resumption of business today. took up the situation precisely where it had been left at the close Saturday. There were no developments over the holiday to_in- fluence prices either . The market simply went ahead under the Impetus of last week's advance. New high records were numero: Included in this were the Plerce Arrow stocks, Packard Motors, Cer- tainTeed Products, Flelschmann which was up over four points, Atlantic Gulf and West Indies com- mon - and preferred, yhick with the remarkable rise at the close of last week, Owens Bottle, Amer Agricultural preferred, Missouri-Ke sas/Texas, Atlantic Coast Line, Inter national ¥ 3 Land Trust, w and Macy, whic first time. Profits Taken in Motors. crossed par for the o encoun tered a lot of profit-taking, but it was absorbed readily. Chrysler rushed up over 9 points on rumors which were heard at the time of the first run-up close to 150. The strong interest back of Packard Motors again showed t they had the market for the stock under full control. A lot of stock was met in Studebaker around 48%. The strength in the motors extended 10 motor part shares like Fisher Body and Hayes Wheel Atlantic Coast Line was the leader in such activity as appeared in the railway section. The new high record, ‘well above 190, brought out the usual reports of melon-cutting. A moderate amount of buying which could have easily been assigned to investment ac- count, showed itself in Atchison and New York Central. The pressure was lifted against the stocks of the an- thracite carriers, and Reading at 86 was selling nearly 3 points above the low of last week. Various Other Strong Spots. American Smelting was strong on a rise to 110. Coca Cola ran up over 3 points. Ward Baking B was a fea- ture, and so were the shares of mail order and other merchandising com- panies. Sears Roebuck had a remark- able rise into new high ground. Mont- gomery Ward was up 2 points, and so was Woolworth. There was a good deal more activity in Central Leather shares, with advances of over a point in both classes of stock. American Agricultural stocks were among those which sold at maximum figures tod: For the first time since 1920 American Agri- cultural has been making real money. It earned $7.19 a share on the prefer- red stock during the 12 months ended rune 30. It reduced its bonded debt by $3.235,000 and had cash on hand at the close of the fiscal period of $6. 265,507, nearly double the 1924 bal- ance. The big point about the fertil- izer industry is that the farmer is not looking so much as he was for long- term credits, but is getting used to paying in cash. MARKET CLOSES FIRM. Chemical Higher Call Money Checks Rally in Certain Stocks. NEW YORK, September 8 (#).— The closing was firm. Marking up of the call money rate to 5% per cent in the late afternoon slowed up trading and checked the rally in some stocks, American Can sold down points. Food shares continued to show impressive strength, California Packing, Fleischmann, Cudahy Pack- ing and Ward Baking B selling 3 to 4 points higher. Total sales approxi- mated 1,200,000 shares. Chrysler crossed 149 for a net gain of more than 10 points, to within a small fraction of its record high. Mail order, merchandising, food, equipment and public utility sues also de- veloped several points of strength, with pools again active in a number of speciaities. Rails followed in the wake of the industrials, Kansas City Southern assuming the leadership of that group by climbing 4 points to a record high. Pittsburgh Gulf, Mobile o broke peak prices. September 8 (#).— The Great W n Sugar Co. today declared its regular quarterly dividend of $1.75 on preferred stock and $2 on common stock (rovernment le firm GASOLINE CHEAPER. BOSTON, September 8 (#).—Reduc- tlon of one cent a gallon in the retail price of gasoline at filling stations was announced today by the Gulf Refining Co. and the Atlantic Refining ‘0. The new price is 19 cents a gallon metropolitan Boston. The tank wagon price of 16 cents is unchanged. GRAIN EXféiTS INCREASE. Grain exports from the United States last week were 5,786,000 bushels, cofpared with 8,473,000 the previous week. The Commerce De- partment today announced. CLOTH PRICES STEADY. NEW YORK, September 8 (Special). —Cotton goods markets resumed to- day where they had left off last wekk, with business slack and prices steady. Print cloths were quoted at 9% cents for 64x60's and 10% for 68x72's. Raw silks made a sharp spurt ahead in price in active market. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September 8.—Foreign bonds were again the leaders in to- day's quiet put generally firm market. The German 7s, on a large turnover, advanced to a new high record for all time, and there was more buying, at higher prices, of the French cities 6s, all three issues, and of the French railway obligations, the Paris, Lyons and Mediterranean 6s and 7s, the Paris Orleans 7s and the Nord Railways 648 0 to new points on this movement. y of Soissons 6s had a rapid rise of a point and a half within a fraction of the best of the year. All the direct obligations of the French government were firm around Saturday’s closing figures. Leaders Among Rails. Two features stood out among the rails—one the Florida Western and Northern 7=, at one time up 5 points, and the other the Denver and Rio Grande Western 0s, up over a point, crossing 67 for the first time since they were issued. There were no new developments In either case, the one being bought because of the title it carries to stoc” in Florida Land De- velopment and the other because earn- ings give promise of the initiating of interest payments. The local trac tions were strong at the start, but re- acted later in the day. International Telephone & Telegraph 5%s dupli- cated their record high. U. S. Bonds Advance. In United States Government bonds the fourth 43 Liberties went msxer. but the balance of the list was fac- tically unchanged. The announce- ment by Secretary Mellon of a Treas- ury offering of $250,000,000 in 3% per cent certificates of indebtedness was taken to mean that the Treasury au- thorities did not anticipate any sub- stantial rise in money rates. There will be no further Govern- ment financing until December which it is probable another of certificates will be offered, although it may take the form of bonds. The decision will depend on the outlook for money three months hence. (Copyrizht. 1025.) RECOVERY IN STOCKS DECLARED AMAZING W YORK, September 8 (#).— Seldom in recent stock market history has a recovery of prices been so im- pressive as that which followed the sharp decline early last week. A study of the “averages” discloses that 20 leading Industrial stocks broke from a high of 129 on August 22 to a low of 125.60 on September 2 and then rallied to 128.47 in the next three days.
